2022 NY Governor's race: on Education

Andrew Giuliani: Open more charter schools, give parents choice

Giuliani also accused Cuomo and Democratic legislators of abandoning parents and kids by failing to raise the cap on the opening of more charter schools. "I will be someone to fight for your choice. The 270 cap in New York City is beyond absurd. The cap needs to go up. It's hurting kids who don't have the means to go to an expensive private school," he said.

Andrew Giuliani: Wants a tax voucher program for school choice

[On schools]: "I'm a big believer in bringing the free market into education," he said. "I don't think the teachers' union should decide, exclusively, what our child's education should be." Giuliani said he will move to raise the charter school cap from 460 to over 1,000. "That's why I want to make sure there is a tax voucher program here in New York so that way parents can take those tax dollars and take them to a private school, a parochial school, a Yeshiva, or a home school," he said.

Joe Pinion: We need to have school choice for every single child

[On schooling]: "I think we need to have school choice for every single child and American that wants it," Pinion said. "We're spending close to $28,000 per child, and not getting the results that amount of spending should generate."

"If you look around New York and look around the country, 70 percent of the children in Baltimore high schools read at the elementary school level. That's child abuse, anyway you slice it," Pinion said.

Kathy Hochul: Make state schools tuition-free for middle-class families

In the age of advanced technology, access to higher education has become increasingly more difficult. With the belief that education is a human right, Kathy and the Governor fought hard to make SUNY and CUNY schools tuition-free for every middle-class family.

Tom Suozzi: Work with yeshivas that fall short on secular education

[On parochial schools]: "They were looking at 28 schools that had a problem regarding secular education," Suozzi said about the Department of Education report that yeshivas were not providing the amount of secular education required by state law. Suozzi, who attended a Catholic high school, added, "I don't think the state should be trying to control everything. If they're performing well leave them alone. If they are not performing well, then figure out how to solve the problem."
