2022 OK Governor's race: on Principles & Values

Ervin Yen: Reason for running: state's lack of response to COVID

On COVID: "The No. 1 reason I'm doing this," Yen told Tulsa public radio's KWGS, "is the state's lack of response to this COVID virus. In my opinion, the state is not doing anything about it. They did back in the spring when everything was shut down, and that made sense, but now we are not doing anything.

"Every day I see these deaths and it just ticks me off more. This is horrible. We have to do something."

Ervin Yen: I have not changed; the Republican Party has

A Republican gubernatorial candidate renounced his political party and said he plans to challenge Gov. Kevin Stitt as an independent. Yen criticized the Oklahoma Republican Party's opposition to COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates and dismissed conservative conspiracy theories about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, baseless claims that have been debunked. "The Oklahoma GOP has left me," Yen said in a news release. "I have not changed; the Party has."

Joy Hofmeister: Lifelong Republican became Democrat to challenge incumbent

State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister is running for governor--as a Democrat. The 57-year-old lifelong Republican is changing her party registration in order to launch a bid to unseat Republican incumbent Kevin Stitt. "Gov. Stitt is running the state into the ground," said Hofmeister. "Through extremism, partisanship, ineffective leadership, he is hurting our education system, our health care, our infrastructure.

Joy Hofmeister: Throughout my life, I've valued hard work and perseverance

Throughout my life, I've valued hard work and perseverance. When I was a child, with the help of committed teachers, I worked to overcome the challenges of living with dyslexia and now am proud to be an advocate for dyslexia awareness. As a young adult, I faced the uncertainty of dropping out of college, only to later graduate at the top of my class at Texas Christian University with a degree in education.

Joy Hofmeister: Tried to bar religious discrimination in scholarship program

The LNH law includes a provision mandating that participating private schools cannot discriminate "on the ground of race, color, or national origin." During the administration of Hofmeister, the Department of Education rewrote regulations to also bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and religious affiliation. The regulations effectively required religious schools to hire atheists as teachers and/or abandon student code-of-conduct requirements regarding sexuality and marriage.
