2022 OR Governor's race: on Education

Christine Drazan: Expand access to school choice, stand up for parents' rights

As Governor, I will lead by keeping our schools open full time and in person, get back to the basics in the classroom, give parents a forum to be heard, and leave the politics at home where it belongs. And I will expand access to school choice so that students can learn in the education environment that best fits their needs. I will stand up for parents' rights and ensure that they have a voice in where and how their child gets an education.

Nicholas Kristof: Make education a priority; make sure kids don't drop out

He said if elected he would prioritize three topics as governor: homelessness and housing, education, and jobs. "There are so many areas we need to address. We have a very short school year. We allow kids to drop out before the age of 18 in ways that other states don't," Kristof said. "Fundamentally it's about making education a priority. And especially making sure kids stay in school and don't drop out."

Nicholas Kristof: Companies won't invest here if schools aren't top-notch

Along with Oregon's shorter school year, Kristof believes Oregon is approaching a point where the education system will impact the state economically. "Companies aren't going to want to invest here if they can't promise their employees top-notch schools." he said.

Tobias Read: Extend the school year so kids have year-round learning

As Governor, Tobias will work to make Pre-K available to every Oregon child; extend the school year so kids have year-round learning and summer enrichment opportunities; expand apprenticeships and vocational training to all who want them; and work to bring down the cost of community college and 4-year degrees. He knows that an educated and skilled workforce is the best way to grow our economy and bring new jobs to Oregon.

Betsy Johnson: Give parents more options for their children's education

I will appoint educators who will challenge--not defend--the failing status quo. When necessary, I will take-on the powerful teachers' union to put the needs of students first. I believe in giving parents more options for their children's education including charter schools, home schooling, and other alternative education opportunities such as career and technical education opportunities.
