2022 RI Governor's race: on Abortion

Ashley Kalus: Described herself as pro-life; opposed abortion rights law

A group backed by the Democratic Governors Association has already launched an ad attacking Kalus. The ad takes aim at Kalus's stance on reproductive rights, quoting a clip from a TV interview in which she described herself as pro-life and saying that she would not have supported the 2019 Reproductive Privacy Act, which aims to protect abortion rights in the state. "But Kalus, backed by anti-choice extremists, wouldn't have signed that law," the ad says.

Dan McKee: Identifies as supportive of abortion rights

Gov. Gina Raimondo and Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, both Democrats who identify as supportive of abortion rights, face spirited primaries on their left this year, as do several anti-abortion legislators, with the challengers making abortion rights one of their top priorities.

Gina Raimondo: Signed bill codifying abortion protections

Raimondo has signed a bill codifying abortion protections. The bill "codifies what has been the status quo under Roe v. Wade for nearly five decades," Raimondo said. "It protects a woman's access to reproductive health care here in Rhode Island at a time when that access is under threat at the federal level and in states across our country."

Nellie Gorbea: Access to abortion is a fundamental right

I am appalled at the Supreme Court's final ruling. Access to abortion is a fundamental right and I'm proud that we've worked together to protect that right in Rhode Island, including codifying Roe into state law. As Governor I will do everything in my power to ensure that Rhode Islanders will continue to have equitable access to safe and legal abortions.

Helena Foulkes: Eliminate ban on abortion coverage in state budget

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Helena Foulkes joined activist calls for Gov. Dan McKee to amend his proposed budget to include taxpayer funding for abortions, as the issue moves higher on the political agenda. "While Governor McKee failed to lead in support of the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019, he can still do the right thing today," she said. "Governor McKee: please amend your budget to eliminate the ban on abortion coverage that impacts nearly one in three Rhode Island women."
