Nellie Gorbea in 2022 RI Governor's race

On Government Reform: Supports repealing the state's voter ID law

When she first ran for secretary of state in 2014, Gorbea said she'd support repealing the voter ID law, which she called "a solution looking for a problem." When asked if she still feels that way today, she said, "Absolutely. I don't think that that is something that really secures our election." Plus, the state has other means of guarding against voter fraud, she said.

On Abortion: Access to abortion is a fundamental right

I am appalled at the Supreme Court's final ruling. Access to abortion is a fundamental right and I'm proud that we've worked together to protect that right in Rhode Island, including codifying Roe into state law. As Governor I will do everything in my power to ensure that Rhode Islanders will continue to have equitable access to safe and legal abortions.

On Budget & Economy: Simplify statewide process to encourage homebuilding

Consistently fund the development of supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness and those who require ongoing behavioral health services. Work with state agencies, municipalities, nonprofit and for-profit home builders on a statewide process that simplifies and expedites the building of homes. Implement programs that incentivize the modernizing of multi-family properties. Work with municipalities to hold landlords accountable for properties not being maintained to code.

On Education: Pass "Right to A Quality Education" constitutional amendment

Support and pass a constitutional amendment for a "Right to A Quality Education", which shows our state is clear on its priorities. This constitutional amendment holds us and future generations accountable for ensuring our children receive the education they deserve. Become a national leader in providing high quality care and early childhood education for our youngest children by providing affordable, universal access to early childhood care and pre-K programs by the end of my first term.

On Energy & Oil: Incentivize energy efficiency in new home construction

Uncertainty and delays in the building process leads to increased costs. We can streamline permitting while ensuring that we build a diversity of home types and incentivize the building of energy-efficient homes. Create incentives that promote energy efficient practices in new home construction of both market rate and government subsidized housing.

On Government Reform: Policymakers should reflect diversity of the state

According to Gorbea, the best way to have policies that address the state's diversity is by putting people in power and positions that reflect diversity of the state. During her career, she has brought together people of diverse backgrounds to the policy making table and plans to do the same as governor. She said the government has the ability to work with the nonprofit sector and would like to restructure the way the two partner with each other.

On Gun Control: Need the courage to pass common sense gun reform

From Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea came this tweet: "I am reeling from the unspeakable horror of another mass shooting. Vulnerable children & adults who cared for them were shot & killed today. We need to find the courage to stop this ongoing chaos through common sense gun reform & increased investments in mental health services."

On Principles & Values: Government doesn't run like a business, nor should it

I'm just saying that I have more than just business experience. Government runs differently. It does not run like a business, and it shouldn't run like a business. It's in the business of people, of serving the public. The bottom line is not the only line that you're going to be looking at--you're going to be looking at the welfare of the people that you're serving. And so that's a really key differential.

On Tax Reform: Would increase marginal tax rate for the top 1%

As governor, Gorbea said she would sign the bill to raise the top margin income rate from 5.99 to 8.99 percent on income of more than $475,000, essentially the top 1 percent of taxpayers. "I do sign it because I believe that it's gone through a whole process in the legislature of vetting it," she said.

On Welfare & Poverty: Fully fund school lunch and breakfast programs

Use state and federal funds to fully fund school lunch and breakfast to children at all publicly funded schools. No child should go hungry. Meals can feed the body, the soul and the mind. Breaking bread with each other has been a long-time strategy for community building.
