On Energy & Oil: There's strong bipartisan opposition to offshore drilling

An international nonprofit is asking business owners to join its new coalition to protect the coastal environment. The participants agreed drilling and offshore exploration, such as seismic surveys, can result in severe damage to the environment and the economy. "Eastern North Carolina is politically conservative," Mayor Newton said, "but there's been strong bipartisan opposition to offshore drilling--even the exploration can be damaging."

On Environment: As mayor of coastal town has made clean water a priority

Beaufort Mayor Everette "Rett" S. Newton says he has made clean water a priority while holding office since 2017 in the coastal town. "I am the environmental candidate and I just want to continue our work to protect our environment," he said. Newton told Coastal Review that environmental protection is good not only for public health but also for commerce, "because people want to come to a clean water coastal community. People want to live, work and play in a clean water coastal community."

On Homeland Security: Served 28 years in Air Force including post 9/11 air patrols

He served in the Air Force for 28 years in roles that encompassed electronic warfare engineering, F-15E Strike Eagle leadership and assignments as an Arabic foreign area officer. During his military career, he responded to crises including flying combat air patrols to protect Washington, D.C., following 9/11, and assisting the large-scale disaster relief effort following the 2004 tsunami in South Asia.

On Principles & Values: Pursuing doctorate while serving as mayor

Newton was elected mayor of Beaufort, North Carolina in 2017 and reelected in 2019, and is also a doctoral candidate at the Duke University Marine Lab. He also has bachelor's degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering, as well as another degree from American University. He was heavily involved in the recovery process after Hurricanes Florence and Dorian and also took early measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus in Beaufort. Newton also served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years.
