Survey of 2022 Senate campaign websites: on Crime

Alex Lasry: Ban chokeholds, no-knock warrants, end qualified immunity

We need to make sure law enforcement agencies aren't overburdened and instead expand funding for intervention services so that law enforcement can focus on imminent threats to the public. We need to increase funding for counseling, mental health, addiction, and homelessness services so police only need to focus on imminent threats to the public. We also need to reinvest in our police training too. This money should come from the federal government to support overstretched municipal budgets.

Along with increasing funding for our public safety programs, we must also increase accountability. Congress should act immediately to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill would ban chokeholds, carotid holds, and "no-knock" search warrants, create a national database of police misconduct, and end qualified immunity. These are all very important steps in reforming how we handle policing in this country.

Bernie Moreno: We must stand together to "defend the police"

We need to restore respect for law-and-order in this country, and for those who work every day to keep us safe: our military, our police officers, and our first responders. While radical Democrats want to "defund the police," we must stand together to "defend the police" and give our men and women in uniform the resources and the training they need to properly protect us.

Cheri Beasley: End cash bail, some mandatory minimum sentences

Cheri supports the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, and reforms including increasing investments in public safety, community policing, racial bias, de-escalation, and crisis intervention training for law enforcement. She supports investing in resources for alternative first responders like mental health professionals and substance abuse counselors. We must have comprehensive reforms that establish accountability, increase transparency, and put more resources into public safety--not less.

She supports expanding the use of drug treatment and mental health courts and legalizing and regulating cannabis. She also supports reforming sentencing, including ending some mandatory minimums and ending the cash bail system particularly for nonviolent offenders. She also supports the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and investing in reentry programs that help returning citizens successfully re-enter society after serving their time and become contributing members of our communities.

Dan Whitfield: Need to reform, not "defund," the police

"Defund the Police" was a terrible title to the type of reform we need. I do think we need to demilitarize the police.
  1. Higher educational requirements.
  2. Annual de-escalation training.
  3. Minimum force necessary requirements.
  4. Require a body camera while on duty and outside their precinct.
  5. Community Review Panels.
  6. Ending Qualified immunity.

David McCormick: Will always back and support law enforcement officials

Crime and murder rates across American cities, including sanctuary cities like Philadelphia, are at record highs. Open border policies are flooding Pennsylvanian communities with illegal drugs like fentanyl and defund the police movements are leading to more crime in our cities--crime that is creeping into the suburbs. Dave supports securing our border to stop drug trafficking and will always back and provide support for our dedicated law enforcement officials.

Eric Schmitt: Launched Cold Case Unit, testing backlog of rape kits

Eric launched the Safer Streets Initiative, an unprecedented cooperative effort between lawyers in the Attorney General's Office and federal prosecutors to take on violent crime. To address the backlog of untested sexual assault kits, Eric launched the SAFE Kit initiative to bring justice for Cold Case Unit to obtain justice for victims who have waited far too long.

Evan McMullin: Our criminal justice system must treat everyone equally

We maintain that the impartial rule of law is essential to a free and just society to protect the rights, safety and property of all people. No one is above the law, including public officials, and our criminal justice system must treat everyone equally without discrimination based on race, status or other unrelated factors.

Gerald Malloy: Fund our Police; preserve order to enjoy freedoms

Fully support Law Enforcement. Funding, not Defunding, our Police; preserving order to enjoy freedoms.

Herschel Walker: Defunding the police is a ridiculous idea

Herschel thinks that defunding the police is a ridiculous idea. Crime is out of control in many of our major cities, including Atlanta, because politicians have demoralized, defunded, and undermined the good men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day so that we can be safe. Herschel will fight to fully fund all of our public safety officials by ensuring that they have the staff, equipment, and training needed to keep every neighborhood free from fear.

Jeff Bartos: Against "Defund the Police," police need to be fully funded

Jeff will oppose any radical attempts to 'Defund the Police.' Radical Democrats' attempts to Defund the Police are dangerous for our communities. Crime is soaring in our communities and national Democrats are actively turning their backs on our women and men in uniform. Jeff believes our police departments and law enforcement officers need to be fully funded and have all of the tools necessary at their disposal to help keep our communities safe.

Jim Lamon: Guarantee law enforcement qualified immunity

Joan Farr: Overhaul legal system, stop innocents from being jailed

Criminal justice reform is great, but what are we doing to ensure that NO innocent people end up in jail in the first place? Lawyers become judges become politicians, and I believe this is the problem. Overhauling the legal system will fix it.

Joe O`Dea: Defunding the police isn't just bad; it's morally wrong

Here at home, we are losing our cities to homelessness and crime. The political elite refuse to stand with the police and first responders. My dad was a Denver beat cop. So the way the police are being demonized really upsets me. Defunding the police isn't just a bad idea. It's morally wrong and the communities who suffer the most aren't the rich or the middle class--it's people in poor and disadvantaged communities.

John Fetterman: Overhauled clemency process, recommended more commutations

Chair of Pennsylvania's Board of Pardons, John has led the fight to give second chances to non-violent inmates and free those wrongfully convicted. He has taken steps to overhaul the clemency process, including eliminating all fees associated with applying for a pardon, making the pardons application more user-friendly, and working to move the application process online. Under John's tenure, the Board has recommended more applicants for commutation than under any lieutenant governor in decades.

Justin Olson: Strong supporter of law enforcement professionals

Justin is a strong supporter of our country's law enforcement professionals. While the radical left cries to defund the police, Justin will firmly back the blue so our police officers can continue to keep our communities safe.

Kathy Salvi: I will always stand with the police and the rule of law

The progressive policies and the destructive rhetoric used by Democrat politicians in Washington to "defund the police" increase crime and erode the rule of law. I will always stand with the police. This includes giving them the resources they need to do their jobs and to protect our communities. It also means standing for the rule of law and holding those who break the law accountable.

Mark Walker: Support law enforcement, criminal justice reform

Michael Franken: Make our criminal justice system work fairly for everyone

Our criminal justice system is not and has not been fair for many reasons. There are different standards built into the system that penalize black and brown communities. Franken will fight to make our criminal justice system work fairly for everyone, not just the wealthy, connected, and wily.

Michael J. Steele: Opposes death penalty; innocent people have been executed

I will be tough on crime one thing that our former leaders in North Dakota forgot about. I am however against the death penalty because to many of our citizen who were innocent after modern technological advancements such as DNA and Forensics proved that the wrong people's lives were terminated due to the death penalty. I believe the punishment should fit the crime.

Michael J. Steele: Supports Rapid Response for battered women

Rapid Response team for Abused, Battered, and Stranded Women: I support this 100% because I have helped some women that were trapped in an abusing situation already. Some of the women that I helped preferred to be stranded in the cold wintertime just to escape from their abusers. These women need our help right now throughout not only the Dakotas but also the rest of our country as a whole. I will fight in the Senate to have this Bill adopted.

Sharif Street: Allow life sentence convictions to be open to parole

Sharif's has written and introduced legislation to permit an individual sentenced to life imprisonment under the laws of this Commonwealth to be considered for parole after a reasonable amount of time. The bill creates no right to parole, so it will not allow our most dangerous inmates to go free. The Commonwealth's Board of Probation and Parole will continue to responsibly reject requests for parole from those who do not deserve it or those who present too great a safety risk to the public.

Tammy Baldwin: Criminal justice system needs review to ensure fairness

Senator Baldwin helped reintroduce the National Criminal Justice Commission Act, legislation that would task a National Criminal Justice Commission to propose reforms to address issues facing the criminal justice system. Our criminal justice system needs a top-to-bottom review to ensure we're doing everything we can to promote public safety, reduce crime and lower recidivism rates. This effort is an important step in the right direction to keep communities safe and make the system more fair.

Trudy Busch Valentine: Support robust funding for law enforcement, first responders

Trudy will support robust funding for law enforcement and first responders to crack down on violent crime, conduct long term investigations into drug trafficking, and promote community-oriented policing programs. Trudy is a fierce advocate for victims of crime and will vigilantly support the rights of survivors in the criminal justice process. Trudy also knows the power of treatment courts in lowering recidivism and will invest in funding to expand the number of treatment courts.

Val Arkoosh: Train our police in de-escalation techniques

Val supports efforts to better train our police in de-escalation techniques, racial and implicit bias, and interacting with people in need of mental health care or substance use care, not jail time. We need to improve relationships between communities and the police by increasing diversity among our police and building forces that know the communities they serve, and we need more mental health counselors attached to our police forces.

Will Boyd: Seek equal sentences for equal justice

Source: 2022 Alabama Senate campaign website DrWillBoyd.com May 25, 2022

Gary Chambers: End military equipment going to civilian law enforcement

Military equipment does not belong in the hands of civilians, which includes civilian law enforcement. In order for our police to function at all as local law enforcement, they have to stop showing up in our communities looking like soldiers ready to conquer a foreign enemy. Gary would call for the end of the DoD 1033 Excess Use Program and supports a federal ban on the use of military weapons, equipment, and vehicles except for in hostage, terrorist, and mass casualty situations.

Luke Mixon: We need to invest in police departments, improve training

Police departments across Louisiana are critically understaffed, underpaid, and under-funded. We need to invest in our police departments, providing them with the funds required to hire more qualified officers, improve training, boost response times, and keep our neighborhoods safe. Every family deserves a safe community where they can raise their children. If we take the politics out of public safety, we can have effective and humane policing that keeps us safe.
