Survey of 2022 Senate campaign websites: on Families & Children

Cheri Beasley: Pass Federal Paid Family and Medical leave

Cheri will also fight to make the Expanded Child Tax Credit permanent and pass Federal Paid Family and Medical leave to help people balance work and family when welcoming a child, caring for a loved one or dealing with a personal illness, just as she created a family leave policy for North Carolina court employees when she served as Chief Justice.

Luke Mixon: Parents should have access to affordable child care

Part of ensuring that our economy works for everyone is making sure that parents have access to affordable child care options so that they can drop their kids off somewhere safe and reliable when they go to work, without breaking the bank. John Kennedy knows that parents need affordable child care, yet he opposes legislation that would make it a reality, like the Build Back Better Act. I will fight to get Louisiana families the help they need.

Natalie Fleming: Respect, love everyone; support traditional family

Natalie embraces her strong Judeo-Christian faith and values, a part of those values is the knowledge that everyone here on this earth is a sacred child of God worthy of respect, love, and protection. Natalie Fleming firmly believes that the Family with a Father and a Mother is the fundamental sacred unit ordained by our Creator to raise his children. Natalie embraces, loves, and fiercely protects each and all of her loved ones regardless of sexual and gender diversity. Natalie gets it.

Sharif Street: Every woman deserves access to affordable childcare

Sharif stands up for all women rights issues, and acknowledges the financial disparities between men and women, violence against women, and inadequate representation in various fields. He is also fighting for affordable childcare for all Pennsylvania moms. Every woman deserves access to affordable childcare, so they can effectively provide for their families.

Tammy Baldwin: Treatment foster care helps kids stay out of institutions

Therapeutic, or treatment, foster care (TFC) is an alternative form of care for some of our most vulnerable youth. The TFC model works to keep particularly vulnerable youth out of costly and often ineffective institutional care. Through TFC, foster parents are given special training to address the needs of youth with major mental and/or physical health challenges. Also through this program, children are given access to intensive in-home services to better sustain them in the community.

Trudy Busch Valentine: Paid sick leave is good for the economy

Guaranteeing paid sick leave. Trudy believes we must ensure no one has to choose between keeping their job and looking out for their health and protecting their loved ones. Paid sick leave is also good for the economy and ensures that illnesses are not rapidly spread through job sites.

Trudy Busch Valentine: Restore and expand Child Tax Credit; make it permanent

The American Rescue Plan temporarily expanded The Child Tax Credit, providing hardworking families with major tax relief. The CTC helped families make ends meet and lifted 3 million children out of poverty. However the expanded tax credit expired and has not been renewed. Trudy believes that lowering childhood poverty is good for all of us and will be a champion for expanding this tax credit once again and making the expansion permanent.

Luke Mixon: Make daycare more affordable so both parents can work

The average family with two kids in Louisiana spends one-fifth of their household income on daycare. That is a prohibitive cost that discourages parents–particularly mothers–from entering the workforce, hurting our families and our economy. I will work to make daycare more affordable to ensure more households can enjoy the financial security that comes from bringing home two paychecks.

Pat Chesbro: Reinstate and expand the 2021 Child Tax Credit

In order to thrive in the workplace, working families must have access to affordable childcare. I support the provisions in the Build Back Better Act that address the long-standing crisis in childcare in Alaska. The 2021 Child Tax Credit of $3000-$3600 for all working families lifted many children out of poverty, but it was not extended beyond 2021. I will fight to reinstate the credit and expand it in the future.

John Fetterman: Fight for universal pre-k and childcare

In Washington, I'll fight for universal pre-k and childcare, and I'll make sure our public schools have the funding they need so our teachers aren't shouldering so much of a burden. I will also work to increase investments in career and technical programs to prepare young adults for successful and in-demand careers in critical industries. And for students who do opt to attend college, to make sure the cost isn't a barrier I'll support efforts to make community colleges tuition-free and reduce the burden of student loan debt that too many borrowers are experiencing right now.

There are too few opportunities for the many young people who don't think college is the right option for them. If we want to prepare the next generation for a highly competitive world, we need to get serious about what education in the 21st century looks like.
