Sharif Street in Survey of 2022 Senate campaign websites

On Civil Rights: Add LGBT protection in our non-discrimination laws

In many parts of Pennsylvania, it is perfectly legal for a person to be fired from their job simply because they are gay. We must add protection for the LGBT community in our non-discrimination laws. It is not only the right thing to do, but it makes good business sense as well. More than 400 companies in Pennsylvania, including some of the largest employers, have non-discrimination policies in place that include sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

On Civil Rights: Against discrimination based on religion or lack of one

All Pennsylvanians must be treated equally, regardless of their religious preference. As the first and only Muslim member of the Pennsylvania Senate, Sharif understands the importance of religious freedom and tolerance in our democracy. He has a record of standing up against any attempts to limit religious freedom and supports policies to protect Pennsylvanians from discrimination on the basis of their religion, or their lack of one.

On Crime: Allow life sentence convictions to be open to parole

Sharif's has written and introduced legislation to permit an individual sentenced to life imprisonment under the laws of this Commonwealth to be considered for parole after a reasonable amount of time. The bill creates no right to parole, so it will not allow our most dangerous inmates to go free. The Commonwealth's Board of Probation and Parole will continue to responsibly reject requests for parole from those who do not deserve it or those who present too great a safety risk to the public.

On Drugs: Emerging cannabis industry could boost job opportunities

Pennsylvania's emerging cannabis industry could result in significant employment opportunities for residents of the Commonwealth. Recently legalized medical marijuana has already created new cannabis-related jobs. The production and sale of legalized adult-use cannabis has the potential to significantly benefit our commonwealth's economy. According to a report from New Frontier Data, the legal cannabis market will create more than 250,000 jobs by 2020.

On Education: Free state college for family incomes under $110,000

The price of a college education has become out of reach for most people and has forced young people to take on massive amounts of debt to finish their education. Sharif supports the PA Promise bill that will provide a free education at one of Pennsylvania's commonwealth-owned/related or community colleges for students with a family income of $110,000 or less.

On Energy & Oil: Put Pennsylvania on track to 100% renewable energy by 2050

Moving to fully renewable energy is important to the health of our planet, but we cannot do it without a responsible plan. Sharif supports legislation which will put Pennsylvania on a track to using 100% renewable energy by 2050. This legislation would bring necessary change--creating jobs, establishing clean-air standards, and giving academic institutions the opportunity to advance new fields of technology--gradually over an acceptable period of time.

On Government Reform: For same-day voter registration, early voting, vote by mail

Voting is a fundamental right and we should be making it easier for people to do, not harder. Sharif supports same-day voter registration, early voting, and vote by mail. On Health Care: Create a public option to compete with private insurers

The Affordable Care Act provided many unisured Pennsylvanians an opportunity to purchase affordable health insurance as part of the Healthcare Marketplace. Over the past few years, premiums have continued to rise, making options in the market place harder for many to access. Sharif supports creating a "Public Option" to compete with private insurers in the marketplace and the creation of a reinsurance program in Pennsylvania that would help insurers lower their premiums.

On Jobs: Increase minimum wage to $12, increase to $15/hour by 2025

Pennsylvania has not seen a raise in the minimum wage since 2019. It currently sits at the Federal minimum of $7.25 an hour, lower than every state that surrounds us. Sharif supports legislation that would immediately raise the minimum wage to $12, followed by a gradual 50 cent increases until the rate reached $15 an hour in 2025. The rate would then automatically increase to keep up with inflation.
