On Crime: Criminal justice system needs review to ensure fairness

Senator Baldwin helped reintroduce the National Criminal Justice Commission Act, legislation that would task a National Criminal Justice Commission to propose reforms to address issues facing the criminal justice system. Our criminal justice system needs a top-to-bottom review to ensure we're doing everything we can to promote public safety, reduce crime and lower recidivism rates. This effort is an important step in the right direction to keep communities safe and make the system more fair.

On Education: Urges funding to help at-risk students' access to education

Senator Baldwin joined 40 senators in pressing congressional leadership to include in the upcoming coronavirus relief package significant funding for the Federal TRIO Programs, which are integral to supporting vulnerable students. The letter comes as the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis continues to exacerbate inequities in education. "Low-income students, students with disabilities, first-generation students, youth who are homeless, have limited English proficiency, and who are in foster care, students in rural communities, and military veterans face greater obstacles to their learning experiences and are often encountering a more substantial impact from COVID-19 . These students are at risk of permanently losing a chance to pursue higher levels of education. A significant increase in overall program capacity would allow significantly more vulnerable students to receive support that is critical to their success and to the economy's revival."

On Families & Children: Treatment foster care helps kids stay out of institutions

Therapeutic, or treatment, foster care (TFC) is an alternative form of care for some of our most vulnerable youth. The TFC model works to keep particularly vulnerable youth out of costly and often ineffective institutional care. Through TFC, foster parents are given special training to address the needs of youth with major mental and/or physical health challenges. Also through this program, children are given access to intensive in-home services to better sustain them in the community.

On Health Care: Good health care for all, especially the most vulnerable

Senator Duckworth will fight to achieve high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans, and she is willing to work with anyone to expand access to health insurance, bring down costs and improve the quality of care for Illinois families. That means helping develop proposals that protect patients from abusive practices, lower prescription drug costs and guarantee that Veterans, children, families and most vulnerable citizens receive the high-quality care every American deserves.

On Homeland Security: Full federal benefits to National Guard COVID fighters

Duckworth wrote to Trump expressing concern that his order to extend National Guard Title 32 authority for 89 days in response to COVID-19 precludes troops from qualifying for additional federal benefits. "Activated troops serving on the front lines of this pandemic should be focused solely on the response to this national Public Health Emergency and not on the status of their Federal benefits. The Federal Government should do more to ensure these public servants are properly taken care of."

On Immigration: Supports immigrants in US and immigration reform

As the daughter of an immigrant and a Daughter of the American Revolution, Senator Duckworth is an advocate for comprehensive, fair, and just immigration reform because she believes that America is at its best when we embrace our nation's rich immigrant heritage. She understands that immigrants strengthen our economy and our communities by working hard every day to build a better life for themselves and their families and is working to advance immigration policies that reflect that reality.

On Tax Reform: Trump tax bill only helps rich who don't need the money

We need to reform our tax system, but it can't just help mega-corporations and Donald Trump's friends and family. This shoddy legislation is an absolutely shameful display of Republicans' priorities that gives permanent tax cuts to those who don't need them and writes provisions appearing to benefit everyone else with disappearing ink, once again forcing Americans to hand over their hard-earned pay so the wealthiest people in this country can get tax breaks they don't need.
