Deirdre Gilbert in 2022 TX Governor's race

On Abortion: Life is life! We cannot choose!

RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE: Respect for human life is the fundamental value of our society in which all people would want to live. Human life is sacred, not just in the creation of life, but the sustaining of life. One cannot begin to speak of life when they expose human beings to grave risks or harm their physical integrity and deprive them of the basic necessities to sustain life.

{LIFE IS LIFE! WE CAN NOT CHOOSE}

RESPECT FOR HUMAN DIGNITY: Respect for human dignity is the human rights framework that establishes that "ALL" deserve respect. Respect for human dignity plays a crucial role in attaining a more peaceful and sustainable world. Our lives have an unimpeachable value simply because "WE" are human.

{DIGNITY IS THE FRAMEWORK OF HUMANITY}

On Crime: WE THE PEOPLE have been stripped of constitutional rights

Texas has been for many years engaged in deceptive and discriminatory practices that have stripped many people of their constitutional rights.

We have had a one-sided plan that benefits those in power but forgets about WE THE PEOPLE. We've seen back door legislation that interfere with our health care by making laws that make it harder for injured people to use class action rules that can expose widespread harms of dangerous products, makes it easier for corporations to get a judge to dismiss an injured American's case before it gets to trial, bar cases by saying the injured assumed the risk, alter rules, deter lawsuits by punishing injured Americans by requiring them to pay corporate attorneys' fees if jury award a significantly lower settlement, bar injured Americans from getting any damages from corporations whose products injure them, allow doctors who have histories of alcohol and drug abuse, rape, sexual assault, and murder to practice medicine, with no legal recourse.

On Drugs: Community-based alternatives instead of mandatory minimums

We've seen back door legislation that alter rules, deter lawsuits by punishing injured Americans by requiring them to pay corporate attorneys' fees if jury award a significantly lower settlement, bar injured Americans from getting any damages from corporations whose products injure them, allow doctors who have histories of alcohol and drug abuse, rape, sexual assault, and murder to practice medicine, with no legal recourse.

Back door legislation interferes with our criminal system by increasing time served for drug offenses through mandatory minimum sentencing, creating barriers to alternatives to prison such as community-based corrections programs, making it a felony to steal from retail establishments, regardless of the value of the property stolen.

On Education: Invest in the state's education system

Deirdre Gilbert, 60, is an educator from the Houston area who has never held elected office but seeks to become the first Black woman to serve as governor of Texas--or any other state in the U.S. She is the only Democratic candidate who has officially filed so far. Gilbert says if elected, she plans to expand health care and invest in the state's education system.

On Government Reform: Texas has a 150 year history of voter suppression

Back door legislation in voting creates significant burdens for eligible voters trying to exercise their right to vote. Texas passed the strictest laws pertaining to Voter ID laws. Texas has a 150 year history of voter suppression, purging voter rolls, forcing polling places to close, creating long lines at polling places, making voter registration difficult, stopping the expansion of mail-in voting, and diluting voting power of minority groups by racial gerrymandering.

On Health Care: Should not punish people for refusing to get vaccinated

Gilbert expressed skepticism about mandating the COVID-19 vaccine and shared concern that people refusing to get the shot may lose their jobs, which may in turn harm their mental health.

"We as a government can find those other options, that we can find legal remedies that are not so punitive," Gilbert said. When asked further about the COVID-19 vaccine, Gilbert would not share if she's vaccinated, saying that information is too private to divulge.

On Health Care: Attention in healthcare laws for the least of us

In 1998, Gilbert's life changed with the birth of her daughter, Jocelyn, who was born with special needs. Gilbert was forced to leave her job to take care of her. Jocelyn died due to what Gilbert called "medical malpractice."

"After the death of my daughter, I started digging into court reform," she said. "Once I started getting into that, I started seeing some laws and bills and all kinds of things that were just not favorable for the least of us. My political leaders were just not interested or claimed they couldn't do anything."

Gilbert said that since she couldn't find anyone to speak up for her rights and the rights of others, she'd be the one to do it. So she partnered with nonprofits and other local activists to teach people about how to protect themselves from "discriminatory practices."

"Somebody [had] to start standing up, to start speaking out about the laws that were being passed that were not conducive to minorities specifically and then just the people," she said.

On Jobs: Served as union representative in Houston schools

Becoming a substitute teacher afforded her the chance to care for Jocelyn while still providing for their family. That decision led to a career as a teacher for nearly 30 years, serving students in the Houston, Aldine and Fort Bend school districts. Gilbert also spent her time working on behalf of her colleagues as a Houston Independent School District teacher's union representative.

"While I was teaching school, I always fought for rights," Gilbert said. "I was a union representative and always fighting for teachers' rights and fighting for somebody's rights. But, I knew that my life was a little bit more than those four walls although I did not know what it would be until I came across a narcissistic principal and that drove me out."

On Principles & Values: Suing to get on ballot after rejected by state officials

[On being rejected from the November ballot]: Deirdre Gilbert filed an additional lawsuit in the Supreme Court, Case No: 22-0818, concurrently with a lawsuit pending in the Third Court of Appeals, Austin, TX, requesting the courts to step in and mandate election officials the Texas Secretary of State and the Director of Elections to include Gilbert's name on the Official List of Approved Candidates in the November Election. Gilbert says "she will not stop until her name is on the ballot in November."

On Principles & Values: I believe that God has put me on the road for campaign

Experience or not, Gilbert believes she can do the job. "I've been around politics long enough to understand how it works and I possibly can tell you how government works in Austin better than some people," she said.

"This is not just a fame and fortune thing, but this is really something I believe that God has put me on the road to do," Gilbert said. "Now, I don't know at the end of that road whether if I'm going to win or not. But, I do know that the road that I'm running and I believe that the road the other women are running as well, that there is a purpose [and] that we all have something in common: Maybe it is yes, we are Black females. But, I think we know, too, that we are capable of doing a job that they say we are incapable of doing."

From lack of visibility to minimal donations, Gilbert said what she's currently experiencing isn't exclusive to her campaign. After talking with other Black women running for governor in their respective states, she found out she was not alone.

On Tax Reform: One-sided power makes tax cuts for the wealthy permanent

We have had a one-sided plan that benefits those in power but forgets about WE THE PEOPLE. We've seen back door legislation that makes it easier for corporations to get a judge to dismiss an injured American's case before it gets to trial, bar cases by saying the injured assumed the risk, alter rules, deter lawsuits by punishing injured Americans by requiring them to pay corporate attorneys' fees if jury award a significantly lower settlement, and bar injured Americans from getting any damages from corporations whose products injure them.

Back door legislation makes tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, makes it easier of tax cheaters to get away with ripping off the public by removing incentives for investigating and prosecuting tax cheats, allowing a small amount of legislators to thwart tax increases by amending state constitutions.

On Immigration: No stance on border immigration

With the March primary election approaching, there is one issue that Texans are deeply concerned about: the Texas/Mexico border.

There is no doubt that the candidate elected this year to the governor's office will face many challenges with the border, which is why it is important to understand what their stances and policies are. Luckily, KETK has compiled a list of all gubernatorial candidates in Texas with information regarding their stances on the border.
