2022 TX Governor's race: on Immigration

Allen West: Texas's sovereignty threatened by Mexico

Echoing a developing theme in the gubernatorial race thus far, West said, "Because the sovereignty of Texas has been threatened when you have 1,200 miles that you share with a foreign nation that is really destabilized and controlled by a criminal terrorist organization in the cartels, we've got to do better and take responsibility as Texas and not wait and make ourselves dependent upon the federal government, and especially this administration."

Beto O`Rourke: Orderly path for migrants, including guest worker program

Gov. Greg Abbott touted the $4 billion the state has allocated toward border security, including funding to deploy thousands of National Guard troops and Department of Public Safety troopers to the southern border to apprehend the large number of migrants crossing into the state. But he noted that the state shouldn't be paying any money because the federal government should be stepping up to secure the border. "Beto said months ago, 'There is no problem on the border.' He said that he would reduce immigration enforcement," Abbott said.

O'Rourke said Abbott was trying to deflect the blame on immigration as he would on other issues. He noted that Abbott's expensive border mission has not had the impact of deterring border crossings. O'Rourke said, "He's going to blame people like President Biden." O'Rourke said Texas needs a "safe, orderly path" for migrants crossing the border that reflects the values and interests of the state, including a guest worker program.

Beto O`Rourke: Busing migrants ok if we coordinate with destination cities

The two candidates also clashed over the governor's busing of migrants to Democrat-led cities like New York City and Washington, D.C., with Abbott questioning why O'Rourke did not criticize the busing of migrants by El Paso, his home city. O'Rourke said the two programs were completely different. (El Paso coordinates with the cities it sends migrants to, and Democratic mayors said Abbott refuses to give them any notice.) O'Rourke said Abbott was comparing "apples to oranges."

Abbott said New York Mayor Eric Adams had never made contact with his office to try to coordinate the buses carrying migrants. But a spokesperson for Adams said on social media that the office had contacted Abbott and sent an email, which he posted with redactions. Abbott's political strategist reiterated after the debate that Adams had not contacted Abbott's office.

Greg Abbott: $4 billion and 1000s of troops for border security

"What we're doing is making sure that we are keeping our community safe, and this is completely different than the way things would be under Beto because he said months ago, 'There is no problem on the border.' He said that he would reduce immigration enforcement," Abbott said.

Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke immediately went on the attack, saying Abbott was trying to deflect the blame on immigration as he would on other issues. He noted that Abbott's expensive border mission has not had the impact of deterring border crossings.

Deirdre Gilbert: No stance on border immigration

With the March primary election approaching, there is one issue that Texans are deeply concerned about: the Texas/Mexico border.

There is no doubt that the candidate elected this year to the governor's office will face many challenges with the border, which is why it is important to understand what their stances and policies are. Luckily, KETK has compiled a list of all gubernatorial candidates in Texas with information regarding their stances on the border.
