On Drugs: Cannabis is popular, but it does damage

Former President Donald Trump has simultaneously described cannabis as "a very popular thing" even while contending that it "does damage."

"Canada has gone all that way [with legalization], and other countries have gone all that way. Some countries won't do it," he said during a recent interview with Newsmax. "But I am going to take a look at some final results. But indications are that is not exactly helpful."

Mike Pence, who served as vice president under Trump, has long been against marijuana use and has consistently opposed even incremental reform, claiming that cannabis is a gateway to other illicit drugs. As governor of Indiana, he pushed the legislature to ramp up criminalization of illicit substances--saying the state was "leaning into the war on drugs"

On Education: Shut down Department of Education; send it back to states

[On video press release]: "Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday he wants to close the Department of Education and have state governments 'run the education of our children,' pushing for a long-held Republican goal that has been endorsed by several other 2024 GOP candidates," CNN reports.

Said Trump, in a video: "We're going to end education coming out of Washington, DC. We're going to close it up--all those buildings all over the place and people that in many cases hate our children. We're going to send it all back to the states."

"But eliminating the US Department of Education would not necessarily give any more power to states over K-12 schools. While the federal agency helps the president execute education policies, the power to set curriculum, establish schools and determine enrollment eligibility already lies with the states and local school boards."

On Government Reform: Throw out rules & articles after massive 2020 election fraud

Trump called for the termination of the Constitution to overturn the 2020 election and reinstate him to power Saturday in a continuation of his election denialism and pushing of fringe conspiracy theories.

"Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution," Trump wrote in a post on the social network Truth Social and accused "Big Tech" of working closely with Democrats. "Our great 'Founders' did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!"

White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Saturday that Trump's remarks are "anathema to the soul of our nation, and should be universally condemned. You cannot only love America when you win. The American Constitution brings the American people together--regardless of party--and elected leaders swear to uphold it.

On Principles & Values: OpEd: Rose in reaction to fear of Obama, like Tea Party

Former president Barack Obama told David Axelrod that the rise of Donald Trump was related to the fears of having the first African-American president.

Said Obama: "I think it's fair to say that something like the Tea Party does not get the traction, generate the heat that it does had it not been for the fact that I represented something that looked like something very foreign to some people and scary."

He added: "I think if you tracked Fox News coverage all the way up through Tucker Carlson talking about "white people are all being replaced and that Democrats are deliberately trying to bring in illegal immigrants and then give them voting rights and welfare checks to buy them off and build a Democratic majority." I think that argument probably gets less traction if it wasn't me who was president at the time."
