Francis Suarez: Federal cannabis policy needs to catch up with the states

[On marijuana]: "Federal policy on cannabis needs to catch up with the will of the American people and the 40 states which have legalized medical and/or adult use," Suarez wrote. "If congressional leaders can't find a responsible path to ending prohibition, deferring to state policy for regulating cannabis is the best solution."

Stephen Laffey: Legalization of marijuana is hurting the business climate

Laffey moved to a ranch in Fort Collins, Colo., three years ago. He said in a phone interview that he's dismayed by changes he's seen in Colorado since moving there. For example, he said the state's legalization of marijuana is hurting the business climate. He also objects to efforts to increase gun control.

Donald Trump: Cannabis is popular, but it does damage

Former President Donald Trump has simultaneously described cannabis as "a very popular thing" even while contending that it "does damage."

"Canada has gone all that way [with legalization], and other countries have gone all that way. Some countries won't do it," he said during a recent interview with Newsmax. "But I am going to take a look at some final results. But indications are that is not exactly helpful."

Mike Pence, who served as vice president under Trump, has long been against marijuana use and has consistently opposed even incremental reform, claiming that cannabis is a gateway to other illicit drugs. As governor of Indiana, he pushed the legislature to ramp up criminalization of illicit substances--saying the state was "leaning into the war on drugs"

Francis Suarez: Companies in China spawn fentanyl precursors for cartels

During the portion of his "Conversation with the Candidate" town hall that aired exclusively online, Republican Francis Suarez detailed his plan to combat the opioid epidemic gripping New Hampshire and the country. Suarez said he'd encourage leaders to think "long and hard" about China's most-favored-nation status given the fact that companies in China spawn fentanyl precursor chemicals, which end up in the hands of cartels in the western hemisphere.

Suarez said he'd move to label drug cartels as terrorist organizations and also added that he'd support sending troops to target cartels in Mexico, but that his administration would be collaborating with Mexico on that endeavor. "We're not going to invade Mexico," Suarez said. "I just don't see that as a realistic option."

Asa Hutchinson: Use economic pressure on Mexico to fight against fentanyl

The key is Mexico, because that's where the precursor chemicals are going. The cartels have it; they're making the fentanyl at the labs there. And Mexico can control both of those. We need greater support from Mexico, we need to use our economic pressure against Mexico so that they will cooperate with us to a greater extent in fighting fentanyl.
