Asa Hutchinson: Don't want government interfering with parental decisions

And so, we don't want the government telling parents when they can have vaccines for their children and not have vaccines or have to have vaccines for children. We fight for the role of parents. And so, a conservative position, you always are debating and think about, is this the right role of government to interfere with parental decisions? I came down on a limited fashion and said parents have an important role to play here.

Chris Christie: Government shouldn't interfere with parents on gender care

Q: As governor of New Jersey, you signed into law some legal protections for trans people, including students. What do you make of your fellow Republican governors and candidates going in the opposite direction?

CHRISTIE: What I believe we should be focused on in these issues is making sure there is parental involvement at every step along the way. I don't think that the government should ever be stepping into the place of the parents in helping to move their children through a process where those children are confused or concerned about their gender. And I just would say that parents are the people who are best positioned to make these judgments. And so what I'd like to make sure each state does is require that parents be involved in these decisions. We were talking about students; people under the age of 18. And the fact is that folks who are under the age of 18 should have parental support and guidance and love as they make all of the key decisions of their life.

Chase Oliver: No state mandates on transgender girls athletics

Oliver is against state mandates on whether transgender girls should be allowed to compete with cisgender girls in female athletics.

"Let kids be kids, and when it comes to more competitive athletics, let individual leagues determine that stuff, but don't let it come from the government," he said.

And in keeping with the Libertarian Party's maximal positions on the Bill of Rights, Oliver is opposed to laws targeting drag.

"Drag is an art form," he said. "It is a performance art and like any performance art it can range from completely family friendly to something quite explicit--just like cinema, music, visual arts. And that's how drag should be treated."
