On Energy & Oil: Nuclear power plant needs less land than wind or solar

One square mile is needed for a nuclear power plant to power over half a million homes. To power the same amount of homes, a solar power facility would take up 75 times more land. A wind farm is less reliable than a nuclear power plant, and takes 360 times the amount of land to power the same amount of homes. These numbers are madness!

On Abortion: Happy Roe overturned; leave it to the states to decide

Steve Laffey identifies as "pro-life" but has not directly addressed his views of mifepristone. "I am happy that Roe vs Wade has been overturned and the issue of abortion has been returned to the states, where it has always belonged," Laffey said in a statement to ABC News. "Let's leave all of these abortion questions to the individual states and let the various courts properly handle all of these issues."

On Drugs: Legalization of marijuana is hurting the business climate

Laffey moved to a ranch in Fort Collins, Colo., three years ago. He said in a phone interview that he's dismayed by changes he's seen in Colorado since moving there. For example, he said the state's legalization of marijuana is hurting the business climate. He also objects to efforts to increase gun control.

On Foreign Policy: Hawkish on Israel, liberal Jewish critics are self-loathing

Laffey, in an interview with the Forward, reeled off a long list of Jewish friends, confidants and advisers, and emphasized his devotion to Israel, which he has never visited because he was preoccupied with work and his daughter's battle with cancer. He is hawkish on the Jewish state to the point that he expressed doubt over the existence of a Palestinian people, and labeled liberal Jews who critique the Jewish state as "self-loathing."

On Government Reform: Close primaries to registered party members only

Reflecting on both his time as a Republican mayor in Rhode Island and looking at how things have gone since, Laffey has one major piece of advice for the state GOP: To close its primaries, meaning only registered Republicans can vote in them. Currently, any unaffiliated voter in Rhode Island can choose to vote in a party's primary of their choosing during the September primaries.

On Immigration: Increase infrastructure at the border; pass legislation

A key issue is securing the Southern border. Laffey said he supports increasing infrastructure at the border, passing legislation and reducing the problems causing an influx of illegal immigration. "We have to tell Mexico if you're not going to deal with your gangs, the drug lords, the ones I actually physically saw, the ones who are making fentanyl now, that's killing 100,000 people a year in America, that we're going to have to come deal with it," Laffey added.

On Crime: Reform the FBI

On Laffey's list of federal agencies to target are the FBI, which he says needs to be reformed, and the Federal Reserve, whose mandate he wants to change so its sole task is managing the money supply to target inflation at 0%.

On Government Reform: Term limits for House and Senate

Laffey says if he won, he would come into office with a list of people to fire - and one of those people he thinks should leave is McConnell, the longtime Republican senator and minority leader in the upper chamber. Laffey argues for term-limits and thinks McConnell has stayed past his time. 'These people stick around way too long. Obviously I'm for term limits,' he said. 'But what's their plan to help the American people now?'

On Social Security: Freeze current system for people in it; reform for future

Laffey argues there needs to be economic reform and fast. And he plans to tackle one of the biggest items in the federal budget: Social Security.

The system has its problems. In 2035, just 80% of benefits will be payable if Congress doesn't fix the program soon, a study found last year. Laffey wants to freeze the current Social Security system--paying the people who are still in it--and reforming it for generations to come.

'We start because can't we agree that it has to be fixed. And so, if you want to, I can tell you what it is we can talk about,' he said. He supports what's known as the Purple system by Laurence Kotlikoff, an economics professor at Boston University. Under it, everyone would put 8 percent of their pay into a personal account, with the government matching the contributions of low earners. All the contributions would be invested in a global market-weighted index of stocks and bonds and real estate.
