On Civil Rights: Use diversity to solve the major problems that we're facing

I wish they would focus and focus their attacks on war criminals like Vladimir Putin, not my friends in the LGBTQ community. It is 2023. We should be talking about, how do we embrace our differences? Because here's what I have learned as I have crisscrossed the country. We're better together. And we should be having our leaders that are encouraging that, that are protecting that, in order -- how we use our diversity to solve the major problems that we're facing.

On Education: We've done terribly preparing students of color for college

The reality is, with or without affirmative action, we have done a terrible job of preparing our black and brown kids to be able to go to college. When you look at the number of black and brown kids that are graduating high school, but not going to college, those numbers are terrible. And so we have been failing them in making sure that they have the skill sets and the tools they need in order to get to college, but also be successful while they're there.

On Foreign Policy: Push the Russians out of Crimea & out of the Donbass

And one of the things that I was concerned that I'm Secretary Blinken said, he said help the Ukrainians take back land that they lost in the last 16 months? How about we take back land that they lost since 2014? We should be making sure that we're supporting Ukraine and pushing the Russians out of Crimea, out of the Donbass. And I hope that was just him, misspeaking. And that the official policy is not just going back to the way things were when the Russians most recently invaded 16 months ago.

On Foreign Policy: China is trying to surpass us as a global superpower

The last two administrations, President Biden, and President Trump has failed in the western hemisphere to build our allies. And why should every American care about this? Every American should care, because the Chinese government is trying to surpass us as a global superpower. And if they do that, that is going to affect our 401(k)'s, it's going to affect our ability of kids to get good paying jobs.

On Immigration: There are common sense solutions, but pols have to sell them

What's happening at the border is an absolute crisis. There's ways to solve the problem, there's ways to actually improve and streamline legal immigration, have more people coming in… We need people that are willing to go out there and sell some of these ideas. It's hard to explain how you solve immigration and the border crisis in 280 characters, but it requires people to go out and make that case, and explain these common sense solutions to these complicated problems.

On Crime: Teach de-escalation; ensure no one dies in police custody

Representative Will Hurd stopped to speak with us about police reform. He says we should ensure no one dies in police custody, but it all starts with training and best practices used throughout the country. But every entity is different, according to Hurd.

"Let's make sure that if you ever have to call 911, that an officer shows up who knows how to deescalate the situation," Hurd said. "Making sure that we use the dollars that go to police in the most effective way possible is the way to do this, but defunding the police will lead to less safe communities."

Hurd said 10 percent of stops law enforcement makes have to do with a mental health issue. When looking at mental health training, he says San Antonio has some of the best practices. Officers in other places only take eight hours, Alamo City officers take 40.

On Principles & Values: Christian Nationalism advocates for American theocracy

Being a good Christian is about living your life based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christian Nationalism is about advocating for America to be a Theocracy - a government based on a single religion - like IRAN.

On Education: Colleges can still consider race without affirmative action

Q: In the Supreme Court's affirmative action decision [SFFA v. Harvard]: Clarence Thomas' opinion said "Individuals are the sum of their unique experiences. And their race is not to blame for everything, good or bad, that happens in their lives." Ketanji Brown Jackson said: "Deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life. Although formal race-linked legal barriers are gone, race still matters to the lived experiences of all Americans in innumerable ways." Who do you agree with?

HURD: Well, race still does matter. And that's why this case allows race still to be used when adjudicating whether or not a student should be able to go to college.

Q: So, you think that colleges should factor race into their admissions?

HURD: Colleges still can. The court made it very clear they are able to use that, because it has an impact on who they are and on their life experiences and why they have been successful or the issues that they have been able to deal with.

On Education: First Republican to say that slavery is not a jobs program

I was the first Republican to come out and say that slavery is not a jobs program, and anybody that is implying that there was an upside to slavery is insane. And what is even more shocking to me is that Ron DeSantis' department of education doubled down on this. Ron DeSantis has doubled down on this multiple times and then he wants to blame the people that wrote this and say, "I wasn't the one that wrote this."

On Principles & Values: Character matters; service matters; US has a world role

I was there to talk to the people that believe in personal responsibility, that believe character matters, that believe service matters, that believes that the United States has a role in the world and it's important to us back here at home. And also to prove to the rest of the field that we're running for an election, and if you're afraid to talk about Donald Trump or talk about his baggage, then you're not ready to be president of the United States.

On War & Peace: Both Trump and Biden to blame for Afghanistan withdrawal

This problem in Afghanistan started under the Donald Trump administration about pulling out. And then, when Joe Biden said he was going to follow through with Trump's intention, of course the Afghan military was not going to fight. This was a debacle that hurt our reputation around the world. And it's just one more thing that our allies are questioning our ability to work together against common threats.
