2023 KY Governor's race: on Energy & Oil

Daniel Cameron: Opposes Biden elevating "green" priorities, attacking coal

Rather than looking out for American families, the President has elevated the "green" priorities of a few at the expense of many. We sued the President to stop the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline. We obtained an injunction stopping him from increasing the cost of fossil fuel energy. We opposed his efforts to exploit air quality standards as a method for attacking coal. We are actively trying to stop the EPA's attempts to overregulate coal and coal-fired plants out of existence.

Kelly Craft: Climate change: "I respect both sides of the science"

The U.S. ambassador to Canada has faced a second wave of ridicule over a 2017 interview in which she said "both sides of science" formed her beliefs about climate change.

In an interview with Canadian broadcaster CBC, Kelly Craft said: "I think that both sides have their own results, from their studies, and I appreciate and I respect both sides of the science."

Referring to President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement last year while every other country committed to it, [Craft said of Trump's policy], "I think that the approach may seem different, but we all have the same goal. And that is to better our environment and maintain the environment," she said.

When asked if she believed in climate change, Craft said, "I believe there are scientists on both sides that are accurate."

Craft was mocked online for her suggestion that climate change deniers have some credence despite the overwhelming scientific evidence indicating the opposite.

Daniel Cameron: Reducing fossil fuel production would cause state to suffer

Five Republicans who hold office wrote a letter to a credit rating agency criticizing it for including environmental, social and governance [ESG] factors in deciding credit worthiness for states.

Treasurer Allison Ball, Auditor Mike Harmon, Secretary of State Michael Adams, Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles and Attorney General Daniel Cameron signed the two-page letter to S&P Global Ratings and called including such factors in their credit ratings "unnecessarily subjective and political judgments" that may lead to changes based on political whims.

Incorporating ESG factors in credit ratings could hurt a state like Kentucky, where producing fossil fuels is one of the state's "signature industries."

"A reduction in coal, oil and gas production would cause increased unemployment, higher fuel costs and a decrease in overall tax revenue, thereby negatively impacting Kentucky's overall creditworthiness and causing undue hardship and suffering for the people of this state," the letter stated.

Kelly Craft: I will not allow the premature closure of coal plants

As coal power shut down, it has been replaced by natural gas and, while I support an "all of the above" energy policy, natural gas has limitations. I recognize energy transition is necessary; it is time for others to recognize it must be done responsibly. We must keep the coal plants running! I will defend Kentuckians from these costs by defending coal. I will not allow the premature closure of coal plants because I know that so long as Kentucky burns coal, Kentucky's promise can shine bright.
