2023 LA Governor's race: on Crime

Jeff Landry: Real leaders need to step in against mayors & "woke" DA's

Sadly, crime has taken hold today while incompetent mayors and "woke" district attorneys are playing a dangerous game of "catch and release." In New Orleans, people are scared to pump gas or walk to their cars. Our capital city has one of the highest murder rates in the nation. And other cities around our state aren't far behind. Jeff believes every family deserves a safe neighborhood, and if those chosen to run these cities won't protect their citizens, then real leaders need to step in.

John Schroder: Close loopholes that allow violent criminals to walk free

As a former law enforcement officer, I've seen the consequences violent crime and drugs have on a community. I have seen how drastically crime can change an innocent person's life forever or how drug addiction and mental health issues can ruin a family. I will work to close loopholes that allow violent criminals and drug dealers to walk free. If someone refuses to act within the law, they should face the consequences.

Sharon Hewitt: Establish Truth in Sentencing task force to clarify process

Our criminal justice system needs to be reviewed. I support second-chances for non-violent offenders with education and job-training. And I want the violent offenders to go to jail. However, victims and their families are often surprised when offenders are released sooner than expected as a result of complicated formulas. As Governor, I will establish a "Truth in Sentencing" task force to simplify, clarify, and provide more transparency to this process.
