Shawn Wilson in 2023 LA Governor's race
On Abortion:
Personally opposes but won't impose his beliefs on others
Wilson didn't describe himself as being "pro-choice" like abortion rights supporters typically do.The Democrat said he personally opposes abortion except in cases where a pregnant person was a victim of rape or incest--or their health is at risk.
But he also believes his personal beliefs shouldn't be imposed on others. Wilson said he is "not interested in preventing folks from making decisions that are private," and "I dare not question their doctor's expertise."

On Budget & Economy:
Made the largest infrastructure investment in state history
We got innovative, tapped into federal funding we had never used before, and created the largest infrastructure investment in state history--5.5 billion dollars, more than 2,000 projects, including 162 bridges--7,000 miles of road improvements.
We broke ground on the Comite Diversion Project, dredged the Mississippi River to 50 feet, and we've made unprecedented investments in ports, rail, and flood control.

On Gun Control:
Gun owner, favor s universal background checks
Like Edwards, Wilson supports increasing the minimum wage, paying women the same amount for equal work as men and raising teacher pay this year by as much as $3,000 per year. Like Edwards, he is a gun owner who opposes
taking guns away from law-abiding citizens but favors background checks on the purchases of weapons at gun shows and garage sales.

On Jobs:
Urged staying committed to diversity, equity, inclusion
Dr. Shawn Wilson remains committed to integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion or DEI principles into the transportation sector and recently urged fellow state department of transportation leaders to stay committed to that vision as well.
As reflected in achievements made under his tenure as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials 2021-2022 president, Wilson called upon state DOTs to continue incorporating DEI principles into their organizations.

On Abortion:
Study impact of abortion laws on our medical schools
My wife and I believe that bureaucrats should not be overriding private and difficult decisions best made by women, families, and their doctors. I believe there should be common sense limitations that bring us closer to Louisiana's laws before the
trigger ban laws took effect:- Work with doctors to protect women & children by clarifying existing laws and including exceptions for rape and incest, fetal abnormalities, medical complications, and related issues
- Work with healthcare professionals
and universities to study the impact of the abortion trigger ban laws on our medical schools and residency programs to determine if students will still choose to study and/or practice medicine in our state
- Reverse the trend of Louisiana's troubling
maternal mortality rates with swift interventions
- Support families at and around the time of a child's birth through early childhood
- Prioritize preventative care, as well as social and economic supports infants and children need to thrive

-
Work with the state legislature to fully fund and ensure effective results of the "Insure Louisiana Incentive Fund" to bring insurers back into the market, create more competition, and lower rates

On Civil Rights:
Supported veto of state's Don't Say Gay bill
Turning to the Capitol where social issues have stolen the spotlight of recent sessions, Wilson believes the governor made the right choice to veto the few bills aimed at the
LGBTQ community, including the state's version of the Don't Say Gay bill. "I think we've got too much bureaucracy placed on teachers. I think that is going to hamper them," Wilson said.

- Continue common-sense reforms that reduce crime and recidivism to keep our communities safe while resisting the
temptation to change what has not been given an opportunity to work
- Invest more heavily in reentry programs for youth and young adults to ensure their reforms are permanent, including making the tough decisions on how to safely house juveniles

On Drugs:
Act urgently to deal with out-of-control opioid addiction
If we would have treated the crack-cocaine epidemic as a public health crisis, many lives would have been saved. The out-of-control addiction to opioids and other illegal substances will undermine the state's well-being and continue to destroy
families unless we act with a sense of urgency. We have to use all the tools of government to address this public health and safety crisis.
