2023 MS Governor's race: on Abortion

Tate Reeves: Abortion services elective and unnecessary during pandemic

Reeves promised to take action against his state's lone abortion clinic if it continues to provide abortions during the coronavirus pandemic. Reeves, who has worked for years to limit and end abortion in Mississippi, said that he considers abortion elective and unnecessary. "We're doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children," he said.

Tate Reeves: We must show being pro-life is not just being anti-abortion

We must show that being pro-life is not just about being anti-abortion. We have to do everything we can to make it easier on those moms who may be in unwanted pregnancies. I have signed legislation to provide help and resources to the 37 pregnancy resource centers that are located in every region of our state. And we're trying to do is focus on making adoption easier in Mississippi. We're focusing on improving our foster care system.

Tate Reeves: I believe that clearly life begins at conception

I don't think that it is going to apply to those that choose to use birth control. I believe that clearly life begins at conception. I am trying very hard to make sure that everyone in America knows that the overturning of Roe certainly puts the decision-making on abortion policy back in the elected representatives in each of the 50 states. That, by the way, is where the decision-making was in America for the first 200 years of our country until 1972 when, in my opinion, Roe was wrongly decided.

Brandon Presley: Pro-life and pro-Second Amendment

Like past Democratic candidates, Presley has staked out conservative positions on issues like abortion and guns. Though he does not mention either topic in his announcement video, he has repeatedly described himself as "pro-life" and a supporter of Second Amendment Rights in the past.
