Tate Reeves in 2023 MS Governor's race

On Abortion: Abortion services elective and unnecessary during pandemic

Reeves promised to take action against his state's lone abortion clinic if it continues to provide abortions during the coronavirus pandemic. Reeves, who has worked for years to limit and end abortion in Mississippi, said that he considers abortion elective and unnecessary. "We're doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children," he said.

On Abortion: We must show being pro-life is not just being anti-abortion

We must show that being pro-life is not just about being anti-abortion. We have to do everything we can to make it easier on those moms who may be in unwanted pregnancies. I have signed legislation to provide help and resources to the 37 pregnancy resource centers that are located in every region of our state. And we're trying to do is focus on making adoption easier in Mississippi. We're focusing on improving our foster care system.

On Abortion: I believe that clearly life begins at conception

I don't think that it is going to apply to those that choose to use birth control. I believe that clearly life begins at conception. I am trying very hard to make sure that everyone in America knows that the overturning of Roe certainly puts the decision-making on abortion policy back in the elected representatives in each of the 50 states. That, by the way, is where the decision-making was in America for the first 200 years of our country until 1972 when, in my opinion, Roe was wrongly decided.

On Education: Be cautious of funding change supported by liberal activists

Be very cautious of a last minute change in funding formula that seems to have unanimous support amongst Democrats in Senate and liberal activist groups. Very very cautious. Instead of funneling more money to the District offices--where our kids won't see it--why not another teacher pay raise? Put it in the classroom!

On Foreign Policy: We have got to be clear that China is not our friend

We have got to be clear in recognizing that China is not our friend. This is a clear and present danger to cybersecurity in our state and honestly across America. We've got to be cognizant of that, we have to be willing to take sometimes difficult decisions to make sure we protect ourselves. When we think about warfare in the future, warfare is not necessarily troops on the ground or boots on the ground anymore. There is a real battle going on for information in cybersecurity.

On Health Care: Vetoed bill requiring private insurance to be "equitable"

Today, I vetoed two bills that had the potential to seriously increase the cost of health care in Mississippi. The first one would basically give the Insurance Commission the ability to set rates for all health insurance. They can massively fine private insurance if they aren't "equitable" enough. It's not what you expect in Mississippi, but that's why we read every bill closely!

On Principles & Values: Ensure Mississippi children learn true history of America

The Governor wants to spend three million dollars for this patriotic fund. Critics say it sounds like a page from President Donald Trump's America First playbook. According to the governor money would be used to make sure Mississippi school children learn the true history of America instead of far left socialist teaching that emphasizes its shortcomings.

On Tax Reform: Wants to push for a full elimination of state's income tax

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves promised to push for a full elimination of the state's income tax during the 2023 legislative session. The move would make Mississippi the 10th state with no income tax. Addressing a crowd of business leaders Reeves touted "the largest tax cut in Mississippi history during the 2022 session" and said he wanted to go even further.
