2023 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Welfare & Poverty

Jay Inslee: $4B to speed up construction of new housing and shelters

Until we fix our housing crisis thousands of people will remain homeless. This is why I'm proposing a $4 billion referendum that will significantly speed up the construction of thousands of new units that will include shelters, supportive housing and affordable housing. This will be combined with additional behavioral health support, substance use treatment, employment services and more. We know substance use treatment and mental health support can work when you combine it with stable housing.

Jim Justice: We've got to say we're going to stop hunger in West Virginia

The one thing that we should absolutely do, especially with us doing how well we're doing right now is put a stake in the sand to some way say we're going to stop hunger in West Virginia. We need to do it. I gotta tell you this, and I want to offer up for us to do the million dollars again to our big food banks. We need to try with all in us to say, by God we're not going to have hungry people in West Virginia today.

Josh Green: Safe, affordable, and stable housing is a human right

Safe, affordable, and stable housing is a human right, and it is more than just a place to live--it impacts our health, our identity, and sense of belonging. We need a comprehensive approach to housing that addresses all segments of the population, from renters to low-to-moderate income individuals and families, to those experiencing homelessness. That is why my administration is making housing our top priority, and committing to a comprehensive housing agenda.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham: $100M for housing programs, we need thousands more homes

I am requesting over $100 million for housing programs, including mobile homelessness response teams that serve unhoused residents; eviction protection that keeps families in place; down payment assistance that helps people start a new chapter and begin to build equity; and investments in the Mortgage Finance Authority, which are matched exponentially by federal funding. We need thousands more homes--so let's build them.

Janet Mills: Housing First legislation addresses chronic homelessness

Housing First has proven to be a very successful and cost effective approach to addressing the needs of people experiencing chronic homelessness, many of whom are struggling for stability while suffering from acute mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Under this legislation, Maine would provide permanent supportive housing, providing communities across Maine with a desperately needed resource to address chronic homelessness and reduce health care and public safety costs.

Wes Moore: We can and we will end child poverty in Maryland

We can, and we will, end child poverty in the state of Maryland. Permanently extending the enhanced Earned Income Tax Credit and expanding the Child Tax Credit is how we begin. This push will make nearly 40,000 families eligible for one of the most successful child poverty tools this country has ever seen. If we do this, and we raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and index it to inflation, we can lift more than 152,000 children in Maryland to the next rung of the economic ladder.
