2024 CA Senate race: on Abortion

Barbara Lee: Pro-choice; shared story of her own pre-Roe abortion

It was very difficult for me to talk about having an abortion, because my mother and I decided it was our own personal business. What happened was I went to Juárez, Mexico, and it was a back alley. I was terrified because it was illegal. I felt compelled to share my story so that people understood they had a member of Congress who saw them, who got it, who knows that experience, and trying to fight to try to make sure that reproductive justice is available for everyone.

Katie Porter: Voted for legislation to create statutory right to abortion

All Americans should be able to decide for themselves when and if they'd like to become parents. The freedom to seek abortion care is essential to the financial well-being of our nation's families and our workforce. Politicians should not come between patients and their doctors when it comes to these healthcare decisions, and I have voted for legislation that would create a statutory right to abortion.

Laphonza Butler: President of Emily's List, backing pro-choice candidates

In 2021, Butler became the president of Emily's List, which helps elect women who support abortion rights across the US. She was presiding over the organization when the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and has been at the forefront of helping Democrats hone their message on abortion rights while tying the issue to a broader fight for voting rights.

On abortion, Garvey said he does not support a nationwide abortion ban. "The people of California have spoken on abortion, and as their representative, I pledge to always uphold the voice of the people," he said. When asked if he supported abortion rights, he added, "The people have spoken, and I will pledge to uphold that."Context from Associated Press 11/9/2022: Voters in California resoundingly approved a ballot measure to enshrine the right to abortion and contraception in the state constitution. Partial returns showed California's Proposition 1 leading with 68% of the vote. The amendment in California declares that the state "shall not deny or interfere with an individual's reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives."
