Katie Porter in 2024 CA Senate race

On Abortion: Voted for legislation to create statutory right to abortion

All Americans should be able to decide for themselves when and if they'd like to become parents. The freedom to seek abortion care is essential to the financial well-being of our nation's families and our workforce. Politicians should not come between patients and their doctors when it comes to these healthcare decisions, and I have voted for legislation that would create a statutory right to abortion.

On Civil Rights: Trump administration tried to erase transgender people

Porter will also fight for LGBT people, especially transgender people who are under threat of erasure by the Trump administration. "I strongly oppose what Trump is attempting to do, which is really to eliminate people's freedom to define themselves and really attack the transgender community," Porter said.

On Government Reform: Only House Democrat to oppose return of earmarks

On Gun Control: Ban assault weapons, strengthen background checks

The federal government has a duty to keep Americans safe. No one should fear going to the grocery store, to school, or to houses of worship. I have supported legislation to ban assault weapons, strengthen background checks, and allow our justice system to hold gun manufacturers accountable. Gun violence solutions should be research-based and effective at reducing gun deaths by suicide, accidental gun deaths, family-based violence, and mass shootings.

On Health Care: Replace Affordable Care Act with something like Medicare

Ultimately, I think the Affordable Care Act should be replaced by a healthcare approach similar to Medicare, with its huge provider network that expands patient choice, its lower costs for coverage of more health needs, and most importantly, its improved health outcomes.

On Homeland Security: Voted against defense budget higher than what was requested

I cannot support a defense bill that authorizes spending $45 billion more than even what our commander-in-chief thinks is necessary to keep us safe. As a champion for oversight, I'm concerned that these taxpayer dollars will be wasted lining the pockets of big defense contractors. Having recently returned from the Middle East, where I spoke directly with troops and commanders, I reject the false claim that tens of billions of extra tax dollars are needed for the sake of national security.

On Social Security: Increase benefits, improve adjustments for inflation

Congresswoman Porter believes that Orange County seniors should be able to age with dignity in our communities. She is a cosponsor of the Social Security 2100 Act, which would increase Social Security benefits, improve adjustments for inflation, and make more Americans eligible for critical support. She also introduced the bipartisan Homecare for Seniors Act, which would allow older Americans with health savings accounts to use these funds for homecare expenses.
