Steve Garvey: Holds MLB NL record for consecutive games played (1,207)

Garvey played as a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987, was a 10-time All-Star, National League Most Valuable Player in 1974, and National League Championship Series MVP in 1978 and 1984. Garvey also holds the National League record for consecutive games played (1,207) and was named baseball's "Iron Man" by Sports Illustrated. Garvey was part of the Dodgers' infield that won four National League pennants and one World Series championship in 1981.

Steve Garvey: Politicians need to take a more civil approach to politics

Today's politicians need to take a more civil approach to politics, restore their sense of duty to our country, and respect the institution. And, as vacancies on the Supreme Court arise, the best solution is to ensure the president appoints and the Senate confirms justices only of the highest moral integrity. Rigorous interviews and background checks must be conducted, not hastily selecting a candidate that will accomplish a short-term partisan goal.

Laphonza Butler: After two weeks in office: not running for re-election

U.S. Sen. Laphonza Butler made herself a lame duck a little more than two weeks into the job and solidified the contours of the U.S. Senate race in 2024. "I've always believed elected leaders should have real clarity about why they're in office and what they want to do with the responsibility & power they have," she said in a statement. "I've spent the past 16 days pursuing my clarity--what kind of life I want to have, what kind of service I want to offer and what kind of voice I want to bring forward. After considering those questions I've decided not to run for Senate in the upcoming election."

"Knowing you can win a campaign doesn't always mean you should run a campaign," Butler added. "I know this will be a surprise to many because traditionally we don't see those who have power let it go. It may not be the decision people expected but it's the right one for me."
