2024 CNN Town Hall: on Budget & Economy

Chris Christie: We must imposing fiscal discipline again in this country

The reason we're struggling to make ends meet is because government spending under Joe Biden has gone completely out of control. The first thing we have to do, and one of the first things I would do as president, is to say, we are imposing fiscal discipline again in this country. Job one is to get spending under control, because, the more we spend, the less you can spend. And that's what's horrible for families making ends meet.

Mike Pence: Freeze nondefense discretionary spending across the board

We need to get federal spending under control. I think we ought to impose a freeze on all nondefense discretionary spending across the board. And we ought to turn off all that unnecessary COVID spending in its entirety. Secondly, I think we got to get the Federal Reserve back to doing its job, which is protecting the currency. Let them protect the dollar, and let's hold our political leaders to account for keeping Americans working.

Nikki Haley: We've got to go back to being fiscally responsible

The idea that they passed a $2.2 trillion COVID stimulus bill with no accountability whatsoever, expanding welfare. Now, we have 90 million Americans on Medicaid, 42 million Americans on food stamps. And then you've got Social Security, which is going to go bankrupt in ten years. Medicare is going to go bankrupt in eight years. We've got to make sure that we go back to being fiscally responsible.

Ron DeSantis: Line-item veto and Balanced Budget Amendment

Q: The federal debt recently topped a staggering $34 trillion...

DeSANTIS: In Florida, we have paid down 25% of our state's total debt. Our budget--even though we have millions of more people than New York, our budget is half the size of New York state's budget.

Q: Are you willing to make balance budgeting mandatory?

DeSANTIS: Look, this is a problem, we have to be honest as Republicans. It has not just been the Democrats. Both parties have spent and borrowed and printed money, particularly since COVID. They went on a massive printing and spending binge. You need a president that is going to be a force for more restrained spending. That means you've got to be willing to use your veto pen. In Florida, I have a line-item veto; I think that would be good for the president. I vetoed 3% of the budget one year. That's part of the reason we were able to pay down debt in the state of Florida. I do think we should have a balanced budget requirement in the United States Constitution.

Kamala Harris: A new approach: national ban on price gouging

One of my aspects of doing what we need to do to bring down the cost of living for working people and the middle class in America is to address the issue of grocery prices. And part of my plan is to create a new approach, that is the first time that we will have a national ban on price gouging, which is companies taking advantage of the desperation and need of the American consumer and jacking up prices without any consequence or accountability.
