2024 CNN Town Hall: on Energy & Oil

Donald Trump: FactCheck: Didn't lose "energy independence" under Biden

[Trump in CNN Town Hall]: "We've really become in many ways a third world country. And it's very sad what's happened in this administration and it is something that we'll turn around on day one where we are energy independent. Now, energy is at a level that we've never had to pay before. Nobody can afford to continue to pay what's happening with energy, but we were energy independent."

Forbes Fact Check: What isn't true is that we lost that energy independence under President Biden. Using the definition of exports minus imports, 2021 was our highest level of energy independence in history. In 2019, our energy exports were greater than our imports by 0.61 quadrillion BTUs (quads). In 2020, that excess grew to 3.47 quads and in 2021 it grew to a new record of 3.82 quads. By that measure, we are more energy independent than we have ever been.

Mike Pence: Climate changing, but don't put undue burden on Americans

Clearly, the climate is changing, not as dramatically as the radical environmentalists like to present, but there's change. Over the next century, there'll be modest changes in temperatures. What we have to do in dealing with this, I think, is bring American innovation to it. We've got to make sure that whatever we do with regard to being stewards of the land, and air, and water, cannot be done in a way that puts an undue burden on American families or American businesses.

Nikki Haley: We're not the problem; China and India are the problem

The reason I pulled us out of the Paris Climate Agreement was not because I don't want us to have a good environment. It was because the Obama administration had put so many regulations on our businesses that we were suffering. And that was the promise in the Paris Climate Agreement. You know what China's promise was? That they would deal with it in 10 years. And I dealt with the Chinese enough to know 10 years never comes. We're not the problem. The Chinese and Indians are the problem.

Nikki Haley: Climate change is real, but no extreme transitions

Q: In the first debate, you were the only candidate who acknowledged the reality of climate change.

HALEY: You know, it's interesting, because I think that this has been made to be a partisan issue. And it shouldn't be. We all want clean air. We all want clean water. We all want a world for our kids that we know is going to be strong and healthy for them. And so, if you look at that, then it's, how do we get there, right? I do think climate change is real. I think that's acknowledging a fact. We need to acknowledge our facts to know where we go. The problem is, we have seen extremes. So we have seen some people who say, "oh, climate change doesn't exist." And then we see others who say, like Biden, "everybody's got to drive an electric car by 2033." You don't live in extremes. But you also look at, what's the transition? Rather than demonizing producers, partner with the producers, because you will find a lot of the energy producers want to do innovation.
