2024 DE Governor's race: on Civil Rights

John Carney: Proclaims Pride Month, action plan for LGBTQ+ equality

Today I signed a proclamation recognizing June 2021 as #PrideMonth in Delaware. Our work for LGBTQ+ equality goes beyond signing this proclamation. Earlier today, the Delaware Department of Human Resources released an Action Plan for Improving State Policies for LGBTQ+ State Employees. The plan outlines specific action items that the state is undertaking to double down our efforts on LGBTQ+ equality.

Matt Meyer: LGBT intolerance has no place within our government

Meyer said attacking someone's sexual orientation is never okay. "I know that name-calling and personal attacks come with the territory of being an elected official. However, LGBT intolerance has no place within our government. Earlier this year, New Castle County celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first pride march by raising the rainbow, transgender, and bisexual pride flags in front of our Government Center."

Matt Meyer: There are workplaces where race is still a major issue

Meyer says the new center will serve as an important tool to highlight prevalent social issues across the country, as well as offer solutions. "If you go to areas across our state and our country you can find children getting really low quality education. Too many of those children are students of color," explained Meyer. "You can go to workplaces where race is still a major issue. And we're hoping that this place can be a haven for education and understanding to move our community forward."

Bethany Hall-Long: Important to address all persons' inclusivity and rights

[At Pride Festival]: "I and my team from the Lieutenant Governor's office, we were just thrilled to join because it's really important that we address all persons' inclusivity and address their rights," Lt. Gov. Hall-Long said. "Those who sometimes feel disenfranchised, it's important they have a sense of inclusivity and for families to come together and celebrate one another's uniqueness. We want to make sure that everyone knows in Delaware, we certainly have respect for our LGBT community."

Mike Ramone: Only Republican co-sponsor of state same-sex marriage bill

The only Republican co-sponsor of Delaware's same-sex marriage bill supports the measure because it's "the right thing" to do. He noted he has a gay son and several of those who have worked at the six flower shops and floral warehouse they own throughout Delaware are out. "Gay people have become very close to us. We just don't believe that they shouldn't be treated equally like everyone else and have the opportunity to get married."
