Matt Meyer in 2024 DE Governor's race
On Civil Rights:
LGBT intolerance has no place within our government
Meyer said attacking someone's sexual orientation is never okay. "I know that name-calling and personal attacks come with the territory of being an elected official. However, LGBT intolerance has no place within our government.
Earlier this year, New Castle County celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first pride march by raising the rainbow, transgender, and bisexual pride flags in front of our Government Center."

On Budget & Economy:
Increased reserves means we can invest without tax increase
He says the county is in great fiscal shape and so is proposing a one-time residential county property tax credit of 5%. Meyer says the county can afford it because reserves increased by 400% since he assumed office six years ago. "As a result,
we are also investing in county government services and infrastructure like never before," Meyer says. "Even with such investments, we simply do not need to collect as much from you this year."

On Civil Rights:
There are workplaces where race is still a major issue
Meyer says the new center will serve as an important tool to highlight prevalent social issues across the country, as well as offer solutions. "If you go to areas across our state and our country you can find children getting really low quality
education. Too many of those children are students of color," explained Meyer. "You can go to workplaces where race is still a major issue. And we're hoping that this place can be a haven for education and understanding to move our community forward."

On Crime:
Address social, economic circumstances that can drive crime
In 2012, 16-year-old Alexander Kamara Jr. was killed in a shooting at Eden Park while he was playing in a soccer tournament. "I remember reading about it in the newspaper and thinking, 'I was trying to teach Iraqis how to do it right and this is how
we're doing it here,'" he said, noting he began seeing more stories of such senseless violence and he wanted to try to make a difference in the social and economic circumstances that often drive crime.

On Drugs:
Celebrate impending end to marijuana prohibition in Delaware
Meyer weighed in: "Today we can celebrate the impending end to marijuana prohibition in Delaware. Thanks to the relentless efforts of Rep. Osienski, Sen. Paradee, and activists, our state will now take the important
next steps to create a new legal market for adults 21 and older that will abate the illicit market and help address the inequities caused by the failed war on drugs."

On Education:
Would be first teacher to be governor in state's modern era
If elected, he would be the first teacher to be governor in the state's modern era. "Arguably, the most important thing the governor does is oversee our education system. You can find countless teachers who are regularly frustrated
by elected officials standing up and saying things about education that just has no applicability in their classroom," he said. "A lot of this is looking at what teachers are doing and supporting them, encouraging them, and compensating them," he said.

On Environment:
Concerned federal government not protecting us against harm
Government must be excellent stewards of the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land on which we live. I personally am concerned that the federal government is not protecting us against potential harm the way it should be. We announced a GreeNCC
agenda to protect the environment in which we live. We have passed legislation to promote the financing of alternative energy projects in commercial buildings and to expand the number of large-scale solar generation projects in the county.

On Foreign Policy:
U.S. engagement on the global stage is essential
While we can't control all global threats, there is much that the United States can do to ameliorate their effects, and even help to minimize or prevent additional consequences here and abroad. It's why
U.S. engagement on the global stage through diplomacy and development programs is essential to help promote global stability and protect America stability here at home at a time of great peril.

On Free Trade:
International trade supported over 20% of Delaware jobs
The good news is that international partnerships help us here in Delaware. In 2019, international trade supported over 20% of Delaware jobs.
Exports also infuse money into our communities. Delaware exported $4.7 billion in goods to foreign markets in 2021, which was a 21% increase over the previous year. Delaware needs to ensure that trend continues.

Problems with access to quality doctors & equity in outcomes
[On prioritization]: "I think there's some urgency about tackling the problems in front of us. The problems of our education system, problems in our environment, problems with the rise in cost of our health care."
Meyer adds educational achievement and inequities, access to quality doctors, and equity in health outcomes are other issues he tackled in New Castle County that are statewide challenges.

Eliminate property tax for 100% disabled veterans
New Castle County fully disabled veterans no longer have to pay county property taxes. With Meyer's signing of ordinance 22-043, veterans who live in the county and qualify for 100% disability through the US Veterans Administration will have their
property taxes for the county relieved. It also reduces sewer and dwelling fees for those same veterans by 50%. "It's really important that those who served our country and sacrificed for our country know that we have their backs."

We will welcome them because refugees make us stronger
[On illegal immigrants transported to Delaware]: "We're here today to stand up to a president who turns away refugees, who scapegoats immigrants and governs with selfish cowardice instead of compassion," said
New Castle County executive Matt Meyer. "Not only will we house them, we will welcome them. And we will welcome them because refugees make us stronger."

On Principles & Values:
Lifts order blocking Muslim burial for humanitarian reasons
Meyer is temporarily lifting a cease-and-desist order for the first Islamic cemetery in Delaware. The move clears the way for burying an infant. "There is no Muslim cemetery in the state of Delaware right now," Meyer said. "It has been a valid concern
of the Muslim community for an extended period of time." Meyer said he's lifting the cease-and-desist order for "humanitarian reasons," on condition the traffic concerns will be addressed.

On Tax Reform:
Cut property tax but not enough to cut government services
New Castle County's 2024 budget includes the first property tax reduction in 50 years. Meyer said the county chose 5% to strike a good balance. "We want to give a homeowner something substantive but we continue to have an outlook that preserves our
ability to address crises, to provide quality services," Meyer said. "So you don't want to give so much back that you deplete your reserves and you have no money to do basic government services."

On Government Reform:
Bring accountability and transparency to government
Transparency and accountability are essential. When I became New Castle County Executive, I promised to bring accountability and transparency to the County government.
Within my first six months in office, I put the county's checkbook online so every resident could see how their tax dollars were being spent.
In the two years prior to my leading Delaware's largest local government, there were 35 ethics complaints against the over 2000 County employees.
Last year there was one complaint. We need that same level of transparency and accountability in state government. Delawareans deserve leaders they can trust.

[On traditions]: "If I don't do something to retain the connection to my family's own history and our community's own culture, it will be lost," Meyer, who was a leader in Jewish youth organizations, explained. He also discussed a childhood tradition--
instead of receiving a present on the eighth night of Hanukkah, his family would give tzedakah, allocating money to a charity. He said his family has maintained that tradition of charitable giving each year.
