2024 DE Governor's race: on Principles & Values

John Carney: Our tremendous diversity is part of our great strength

Governor John Carney signed a proclamation as part of the "Shine a Light" campaign calling attention to the growing problem of antisemitism. The governor's proclamation is not only for the Jewish community, but for all diverse groups in the United States. "We have great, tremendous diversity. I would argue that it's part of our great strength. We're not like a lot of countries, which is just one ethnicity or one religion-based," Carney said.

Matt Meyer: Lifts order blocking Muslim burial for humanitarian reasons

Meyer is temporarily lifting a cease-and-desist order for the first Islamic cemetery in Delaware. The move clears the way for burying an infant. "There is no Muslim cemetery in the state of Delaware right now," Meyer said. "It has been a valid concern of the Muslim community for an extended period of time." Meyer said he's lifting the cease-and-desist order for "humanitarian reasons," on condition the traffic concerns will be addressed.

Bethany Hall-Long: To whom much is given, much is expected

A lifelong Delawarean, Bethany was born and raised in Sussex County, on her family's farm with her parents and two brothers. She comes from a family of faith leaders who taught her that to whom much is given, much is expected--especially when it comes to serving others.

Mike Ramone: Country has gotten polarized, that's not my world

Mike Ramone announced his bid for the governorship: "The country has gotten to such a point of polarization and that's not my world," Ramone said. "I think there's a way that we can all get along, we don't have to make you hate someone so that you don't vote for them." Ramone expressed how he has focused on his own party's unity while also working with the opposite side of the aisle. "We can do better," Ramone said. "We just need to be a little more compassionate. Use a little more common sense."

Matt Meyer: Was a leader in Jewish youth organizations

[On traditions]: "If I don't do something to retain the connection to my family's own history and our community's own culture, it will be lost," Meyer, who was a leader in Jewish youth organizations, explained. He also discussed a childhood tradition-- instead of receiving a present on the eighth night of Hanukkah, his family would give tzedakah, allocating money to a charity. He said his family has maintained that tradition of charitable giving each year.
