On Education: Allow opt-out of sex ed in public schools

In February 2014, McDermott announced his opposition to a controversial sex education program in Hawaii public schools. The program, taught in 12 public schools, is expected to be expanded by the Hawaii Department of Education. McDermott published a report entitled "The Pono Choices Curriculum: Sexualizing the Innocent." The program is designed for schoolchildren aged 11 to 13 and taught in 1,700 middle schools. While the Hawaii Department of Education allows parents to opt out their children from the education, McDermott disagreed with this exception. "The parental opt-out forms are woefully inadequate.
