Sunday Political Talk Show interviews during 2020-2024: on Civil Rights

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Against biological males participating in women's sports

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. seems to be on the same page with some Republicans and conservatives who don't think that transgender people should participate in women's sports. "I am against people participating in women's sports who are biologically male. I think women have worked too hard to develop women's sports over the past 30 years...and I don't think that's fair," Kennedy Jr. told CNN host Michael Smerconish.

Cornel West: If you don't have deep solidarity, diversity means little

West said, "if you don't have deep solidarity, [diversity] is not going to go too far. That would be true for Black women in the Democratic Party. They can celebrate all they want in terms of being Black women who gain access to the class and imperial hierarchy--whereas solidarity with Palestinian women who are catching hell, who are occupied--that's solidarity, that's integrity. If you're just talking about identity, politics is empty in the end."

Larry Elder: Opposes rights for transgender people in restrooms, sports

Elder's views are surprisingly extremist for California and contrary to state laws signed by Gov. Jerry Brown and Newsom. He opposes sex education in California public schools and the rights of transgender people to use the rest room of choice or compete on teams reflecting their identity. "Male athletes should not be competing against female athletes, and you ought not to be able to wake up one day and think you are female and use a female bathroom," he has said.

Nikki Haley: America not racist, nothing could be further from the truth

Haley criticized what she said was a "self-loathing" taking over the U.S. and dismissed accusations that the country is racist during her campaign launch in Charleston, S.C. "A self-loathing has swept our country. It's in the classroom, the boardroom and the backrooms of government," Haley said, speaking to supporters. "Every day, we're told America is flawed, rotten and full of hate. Joe [Biden] and Kamala [Harris] even say America is racist. Nothing could be further from the truth."

Nikki Haley: Transgender women in sports is "women's issue of our time"

Haley said that transgender women participating in women's sports is "the women's issue of our time." She said transgender women--being "glorified" on social media and participating in sports events--were putting cisgender women and girls at risk. She specifically criticized the prominence of transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney, who was recently sponsored by Bud Light.

Joe Biden: Dangerous to question LGBT rights and contraceptive rights

Q: With reference to Justice Thomas' concurrence with Dobbs [overturning Roe v. Wade], he said, "in future cases we should reconsider all of this court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell." Here's what President Biden said that day about that portion.

JOE BIDEN: Justice Thomas' said as much today. He explicitly called to reconsider the right of marriage quality, the right of couples to make their choices on contraception. This is an extreme and dangerous path the court is now taking us on.

FACT-CHECK: Justice Thomas frequently writes concurring opinions that talk about other theories that maybe he's the only one on the court to hold. The opinion [on Dobbs] is clearly limited to abortion and it's also clear that while Justice Thomas is willing to consider rethinking substantive due process, Justice Thomas believes in the "privileges & immunity clause" [due process before abridging rights] which other justices don't follow.

Doug Burgum: Ban trans people from bathrooms & school sports

During his time in office, Burgum has signed into law bills banning trans students from participating in school sports, restricting what bathrooms trans people can use in certain facilities and allowing public school teachers and state government staff to ignore the pronouns of trans students and colleagues.

Francis Suarez: Country should be pro-equal rights for LGBTQ community

Suarez told NBC News he initially supported Governor DeSantis' 'Don't Say Gay' law, but he said expanding the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation to all grades was "excessive." He said that he doesn't "want little kids being taught about sexuality in the classroom", but he wanted the US to be a "country that is pro-equal rights for the LGBTQ community".

Ryan Binkley: Marriage is a sacred bond between one man and one woman

Binkley's campaign website states that he wants to restore America's "faith in God, freedom and each other". The website for Create Church, which he founded alongside his wife and is a lead pastor, states that they believe marriage is a "sacred bond between one man and one woman".

Tim Walz: Added religious-liberty protections to human-rights statutes

The Democratic governor issued executive orders establishing Minnesota as a "sanctuary state" for out-of-staters seeking transgender medical procedures. He has also signed legislation that bans so-called "conversion therapy" and made it illegal to remove books from libraries because they contain LGBTQ themes.

[A Republican] state lawmaker was critical of Walz for failing to criticize 2023 state legislation that sought to give people identifying as transgender protected status without guaranteeing religious-liberty exemptions.

This year, Walz approved new legislation that added religious-liberty protections to Minnesota's human-rights statutes, a measure that was strongly supported by the state's Catholic bishops.

Kamala Harris: Men and women support women in leadership

HOWARD STERN: Women have to work harder to get respect. And I don't understand this philosophy, especially guys who have daughters and sisters and mothers. What is the bias? I mean, what is it they think a woman's going to be weak in the White House? I mean, I don't know how you combat that, honestly. I don't know what you say to those people.

KAMALA HARRIS: Listen, I've been the first and first woman in almost every position I've had. I believe that. Men and women support women in leadership. And that's been my life experience. And that's why I'm running for president.

HOWARD STERN: When you got the call from Joe Biden, "I want you to run with me as vice president," were you floored? Were you expecting it?

KAMALA HARRIS: I didn't know that I was going to get it. And you know, I've obviously put myself out as being open to it. And I was incredibly honored when he reached out to me and offered it to me.

Kamala Harris: We had laws that treated gay people as second class citizens

KAMALA HARRIS: We actually had laws that were treating people based on their sexual orientation differently. So if you're a gay couple, you can't get married. We were basically saying that you are a second class citizen under the law, not entitled to the same rights as a couple who are consenting adults in a loving relationship. You, therefore, when one of you is sick, when one, God forbid, passes away, will not have the same legal rights.

Donald Trump: AdWatch: Kamala is for they/them; Trump is for you

Donald Trump's campaign and his allies have spent tens of millions of dollars on political ads focusing on transgender rights issues in the weeks leading up to the election. The Trump campaign has spent more than $19 million on two television ads that have aired nearly 55,000 times since Oct. 1.

The ads focus on taxpayer-funded gender transitions for people in prison and immigrant detainees. They use Vice President Kamala Harris' comments from a 2019 [questionnaire] in which she said she supported transgender inmates having access to gender-affirming surgery.

"Kamala is for they/them," one ad says. "Trump is for you."

The Trump campaign is betting that with time dwindling until Nov. 5, the issue of transgender rights will sway voters more than the economy or immigration. Trump has underscored that on the campaign trail, often repeating a line about "keeping men out of women's sports"--it often gets the most applause at his rallies.

Jill Stein: Rejects endorsement from white supremacist leader

PoliticalWire.com summary, "David Duke Endorses Jill Stein," from NBC News:

"Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke endorsed Green Party nominee Jill Stein over Donald Trump, citing their stances on Israel this week--but Stein's campaign says it wants nothing to do with the former American Nazi Party member," NBC News reports.

"Duke, a proudly anti-Semitic white supremacist, endorsed Trump in 2016 and 2020 but on his radio show Monday, he slammed the former president's 'subservience to Israel and to the Jewish lobby' and said only Stein will stand up to Israel and its 'genocide' against Palestinians."
