Sunday Political Talk Show interviews during 2020-2024: on Environment

Tim Walz: $200M for broad ban on PFAS "forever chemicals"

Under Walz's leadership, the state of Minnesota took on pollution from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as "forever chemicals" or PFAS--when Walz signed one of the nation's broadest bans on the pollutants last year. And the state additionally prioritized environmental justice. In 2022, Walz's 2022 budget called for a $200m investment in clean water and wastewater, and that year, he signed a bill investing $240m in lead pipe replacement.

Kamala Harris: 2019: ban plastic straws; 2024: no longer her position

When Kamala Harris ran for president in 2020, she said plastic straws should be banned. [This week], her campaign says that's no longer her position.

Why it matters: Banning plastic straws to protect the environment and marine life is the latest progressive issue on which Harris and her campaign have either declined to comment or changed her position.

Zoom in: Many parts of the country have banned plastic straws as concerns have grown about plastic pollution in oceans and waterways.

Flashback: During a CNN town hall in 2019, Harris was asked whether plastic straws should be banned: "I think we should," she said. "We do need to ban the plastic" straws, she added, saying that paper straws needed to be improved.

Axios asked Harris' current campaign if she still supports that idea. "She doesn't support banning plastic straws," a campaign official told Axios. "She joked about how crappy paper straws are and the need to come up with better eco-friendly alternatives."

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: 60% of kids today suffer environment-based health problems

Q: Have you talked about a cabinet position within a Trump government in exchange for your endorsement?

KENNEDY: No, we just made a general commitment that we were going to work together [on issues such as] this epidemic of chronic disease that is now disabled about 60% of our kids. When my uncle [John F. Kennedy was] President, only 6% of Americans had chronic disease.

It's hard to find a kid today that's not been damaged by it, and it's coming from our food supply, from pollution & toxics in our environment, and mainly from corruption in our government that allows that to happen.

The most profitable thing today in America is a sick child. Everybody is making money. The hospitals are making money. The pharmaceutical companies are making money. And we need to end those perverse incentives. We need to get the corruption out of FDA, out of NIH, out of the CDC and make them function as they're supposed to function, which is to protect public health and particularly children's health.
