Jennifer McCormick in 2024 IN Governor's race

On Abortion: I do believe that women should have the right to choose

[On reproductive rights]: "I do believe that women should have the right to choose," McCormick said. "A woman should be able to determine who's making that decision with her. Is it a physician? Is it a type of clinic that you visited? Is it a family member? That's your own body, and as a mom, as a woman, I know the importance of being able to make those health care decisions all the way around."

On Civil Rights: Schools taking public money shouldn't exclude LGBT students

On Monday--the same day she announced she would not run for re-election in 2020--McCormick made the voucher question part of her 2019 legislative agenda. She said it was "a problem" that schools that accepted public money have policies the exclude LGBT students or staff.

On Gun Control: Arming school teachers is a very bad idea

McCormick has been vocal against the idea of arming teachers. She has said arming teachers is a "very bad idea," but she's left room for guns to be allowed in the state's schools. McCormick, a Republican, said there is more risk than reward when it comes to arming teachers. "We lose our keys, for God's sake," she said. "I couldn't imagine trying to keep track of guns and the ownership. Where do we put them? There are so many layers to that."

On Health Care: It's time for accessible and affordable healthcare

[On divisiveness]: "It is time to have a champion for a high-quality education system, and that means childcare, universal pre-K, K12 and post high school training and education," McCormick said. "It's time for accessible and affordable healthcare, including the freedom for women and families to make their own healthcare decisions. It's time for a strong economy from urban suburban to the rural areas of Indiana. We need good-paying jobs and we need well-educated, highly skilled workers."

On Drugs: Indiana should have a legal, well-regulated cannabis market

[On marijuana]: "It is time Indiana listened to the majority of Hoosiers and developed a legal, well-regulated cannabis market," said McCormick. "This opportunity would boost our economy by welcoming an industry proven to add millions to the state budget--just as 37 other states have demonstrated. Legalizing medical marijuana would be the first step. Indiana must take this even further by passing legislation decriminalizing marijuana to support impacted Hoosiers and the criminal justice system."

On Tax Reform: We need to have a conversation about hidden taxes

Q: How would you ease the financial pressure on Indiana's Main Street businesses? Do you have your own agenda for tax reform?

Suzanne Crouch: I voted to reduce the corporate income tax, voted to eliminate the inheritance tax. I want to lead the fight to eliminate Indiana state income tax.

Mike Braun: The way you finance any lower taxes would be to make our government run more efficiently. [Then] you can finance lower taxes, but you got to do that first.

Jennifer McCormick: I agree with a revamp of our taxing system, but also, it's about not just how we're getting in our revenue. It's about our expenditures that impacts that. Yes, we need to fix our gas tax. Yes, we need to look at income tax. But here's the thing: There are hidden taxes we're not having the conversation about. You go ask local people what's happening with school referendums. You go ask them what's happening with some of these hidden taxes that are sneaking up on people.

On Jobs: Support unions and collective bargaining

Jobs and unions: McCormick believes that the way to attract high-wage jobs is to address quality-of-life issues like health care, housing and education. She supports unions and collective bargaining, and proposes they be a partner in helping educators align industry demands with curricula. And, she supports legalizing medical marijuana as a source of state revenue.

On Principles & Values: Criticized opponent's running mate as Christian nationalist

In a debate last week with Braun, McCormick brought up Beckwith's comment along with the fact Braun's campaign was using an ad with a digitally altered image of her. She called the "Jezebel spirit" rhetoric "extremism" that's "beyond the Hoosier values," and she connected it to Beckwith calling himself a "Christian Nationalist." She also pushed Braun to admit those attacks were wrong and apologize, but he refused to do so on either account.

On Social Security: Important retirees have the fiscal means to be successful

McCormick: It's incredibly important that our retirees have the fiscal means to be successful. Also, it's unfortunate that 48% of our Hoosiers do not have access to a pension or a private plan. As your governor, I will make sure we can change that. We can start programs such as the work and save programs to make sure that our retirees have what they need. It's also incredibly important that you have the revenue and access to revenue and securities in order to be successful.
