Mike Braun in 2024 IN Senate race

On Crime: Targeting police should lead to harshest penalties possible

Braun has called for criminals targeting or killing police to serve maximum sentences. "If you try to kill a police officer, you should pay the highest price possible. I support making the targeting of police in a violent crime an aggravating factor in favor the harshest penalties available." Braun said. Braun hopes to make harsher punishment a reality with the Thin Blue Line Act. The act will ensure criminals targeting, killing, or attempting to kill cops, will have maximum sentences.

On Education: School choice should be legislated at the federal level

Parents and kids should be able to choose whichever school they see fit. "Something so important as education has kind of evolved into a one-size-fits-all," said Braun to the Congressional School Choice Caucus on Wednesday. "(Indiana) has led the nation on choice."

Braun lobbied lawmakers that school choice should be legislated on the federal level as well. He told the gathering that you can never find the best result by "only shopping in one place" as a consumer.

On Energy & Oil: Businesses need time to make the transition to clean energy

[On global warming]: "Utilities have already made a pretty strong statement that they are moving from coal to natural gas," said Braun. "It is very clear that the cleanest, least expensive fuel needs to carry the day." Regardless of which energy source is preferred, Braun said stopping climate change cannot be done by pulling the rug out from under people, especially businesses heavily invested in coal and other fossil fuels. He said these businesses need time to make the transition to clean energy.

On Environment: EPA's new emissions standards are overbearing overreach

Braun released the following statement on President Biden's proposed new emissions standards, which intend to make 2/3 of all new passenger cars and ¼ of all trucks sold in the U.S. electric by 2032. "President Biden and his EPA are proposing unrealistic emissions standards to try to push the public further than they are willing to go... I ran a shipping and logistics business for 37 years, so I know this kind of overbearing government overreach will make everything more expensive."

On Civil Rights: Enforce Court decision ending college affirmative action

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court struck a blow against institutionally-driven racism in the United States. In Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College, the Supreme Court found [that colleges with affirmative action admissions] were impermissibly discriminating against certain applicants based exclusively on their race.

While the Court took a big step forward in eliminating racial discrimination in admissions, more work remains to be done. In his remarks in the wake of the landmark decision, President Biden proposed "a new standard, where colleges take into account the adversity a student has overcome, including racial discrimination that individuals have faced in their own lives."

We call upon the Biden administration to embrace the Court's holdings: racial discrimination [does not] have any place in schooling. The American people deserve no less than an Executive Branch committed to enforcing the law equally to all people without concern for their race.
