2024 MA Senate race: on Abortion

John Deaton: Out-of-control judges should not be deciding these things

A Republican candidate said the federal Supreme Court got it wrong when it overturned Roe v. Wade. Deaton made the statement while slamming the Alabama Supreme Court. "Children are a blessing," Deaton posted on Twitter. "Efforts to prevent couples from conceiving are unconscionable and cruel. This is health care and it's about family. Just as they were wrong on Dobbs, out-of-control judges should not be deciding these things. Period."

Elizabeth Warren: We need access to abortion, to contraception, to IVF

We need three things. We need access to abortion. We need access to contraception, and we need access to IVF. The Republicans have blocked all three. They have laid out their plan to say they're not going to permit women to have those three, and have access to them. The Democrats are fully on board. If we have the trifecta, the House, the Senate, and the White House, they're we are going to make Roe versus Wade law of the land again.

Elizabeth Warren: Democrats are for IVF access; Republicans oppose it

Trump told NBC News last month when asked what he'd do about IVF if elected. "We're going to be mandating that the insurance company pay,"Trump told NBC News last month when asked what he'd do about IVF if elected. "We're going to be mandating that the insurance company pay."

Democrats say Trump is lying and trying to bamboozle voters. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., burst out laughing when asked about Trump saying he supports mandating IVF coverage.

"Laugh out loud," Warren said. "Donald Trump will say anything that he thinks might be one more vote in favor of Donald Trump. American women are not fooled. If we're going to if the federal government is going to protect access to IVF and pay for it, we've already voted on that, and the Republicans all voted against it -- including [Ohio Sen.] J.D. Vance, Donald Trump's running mate."

"Trump has no credibility on this issue. None. Zero. Zip," she said.

John Deaton: Massachusetts got this right: unrestricted until viability

Deaton: Massachusetts actually got this right. Which gives a woman right up to 22 weeks to have unrestricted access to abortion. After that period of time she's not allowed unless it's for her health reasons or there is an anomaly. We are talking about the viability issue around that time. That's what I support.

Warren: John Deaton gives us the big defense of the filibuster that keeps us from making Roe v. Wade law of the land. That's the problem. We can't pass it with 52 votes because the Republicans filibuster us. So here's the deal. If Republicans are in control of the Senate, there will be no bill to make Roe v. Wade law of the land. That means when they are coming for us in Massachusetts, we have no defense.
