John Deaton in 2024 MA Senate race
On Abortion:
Out-of-control judges should not be deciding these things
A Republican candidate said the federal Supreme Court got it wrong when it overturned Roe v. Wade. Deaton made the statement while slamming the Alabama Supreme Court. "Children are a blessing," Deaton posted on Twitter. "Efforts
to prevent couples from conceiving are unconscionable and cruel. This is health care and it's about family. Just as they were wrong on Dobbs, out-of-control judges should not be deciding these things. Period."

On Government Reform:
Regulation of crypto another example of government overreach
John Deaton has emerged as a key figure in challenging the U.S. regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies, particularly through his involvement in the SEC v. Ripple case. Deaton has compared the SEC's actions against
Ripple and XRP to other instances where he believes regulatory bodies have exceeded their authority. By drawing parallels with cases like West Virginia v. EPA, Deaton has positioned the Ripple case within a broader narrative of regulatory overreach.

On Drugs:
Opioid addiction is directly related to Border crisis
America has lost over 1 million lives due to opioid addiction. Every 5 minutes, 1 person dies in the USA from a drug overdose and 72% of the overdoses are fentanyl.
Currently, Opioid-related overdose deaths in MA increased by 2.5% in 2022 compared to 2021 with rates among Black residents making up the largest increase.
Unfortunately, MA often ranks in the top 10 states for drug overdose deaths. The fentanyl crisis in this country is directly related to the Southern Border crisis.
China is exporting fentanyl through our southern border, and we must address the root of the problem, or the U.S. will continue battling addiction and losing American lives. We must secure the border and invest in treatment and behavioral health.

On Civil Rights:
Enshrine equal marriage in law
LGBTQ Rights: One of the great policy failures of the 21st century was overreliance on Roe to protect women's access to abortion. Similarly, LGBTQ families in many states are only recognized legally because of the 2015
Obergefell decision by the Supreme Court. It is the responsibility of Congress and the Senate to enshrine the right to equal marriage under the law, and I promise to introduce that legislation in my first year in office.

On Education:
We need more opportunities for kids in failing schools
The disparity in education in our country leaves our poorest and most vulnerable kids behind. Growing up in one of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods in America, I was a high school dropout like all my siblings before me, because
I didn't feel safe where I was supposed to learn. I got lucky and I found a principal at a small Catholic school that offered me a discounted tuition. I became the first in my family to graduate high school, and the first to go to college.
We need more opportunities for kids in failing schools. We need to empower parents and provide for school choice--the money should follow the student.
We need to provide access to charter and magnet schools, as well as increased vocational learning that prepares our kids to succeed in and stay in Massachusetts.

On Energy & Oil:
Energy transition yes; but no Green New Deal
Our climate is changing. For coastal states like ours, the impact of climate change is greater.I oppose the Green New Deal. We need a multi-faceted and balanced approach to tackling this issue that protects our economy and is not ignorant to
what is happening across the globe including emerging economies. We need to move ourselves through an energy transition, reducing our carbon footprint in a very systematic way while not causing a significant detriment to our economic well-being.
Current policies promoted by Elizabeth Warren hurt the poor and middle class. Pursuing renewable energy and independence from fossil fuels is a must, but it must not be achieved on the backs of the people struggling the most. We must implement a plan
that eventually achieves carbon neutrality in a sensible way. I’m confident that our future lies in renewable & sustainable energy, and that the ingenuity of this country, especially in places like Massachusetts, is poised to lead the rest of the world.

On Free Trade:
Return American jobs lost to China with fair trade deals
For over two decades, politicians in both parties have let China run amok on the global stage. Communist China steals our intellectual property, and manipulates their currency to undercut American workers.China seeks to expand its geopolitical
influence across the Middle East, Africa, and increasingly, Europe. To counter the growing threat of Communist China, we should pursue pro-growth economic policies, at home, to make America a more competitive place to invest and create jobs. We must
also improve our relationships with our trading partners so we can increase our exports to foreign markets and return American jobs lost to China.
China is without question America's biggest economic competitor, and we must maintain the global
advantage. Negotiating fair trade deals, addressing trade imbalances, and attracting foreign investments will help significantly. We must incentivize and support small businesses. We maintain a global advantage by investing in innovation and technology.

On Government Reform:
Strong supporter of term limits
I'm a strong supporter of term limits and will work hard to see them implemented. I also pledge now that I will self-impose a limit of two terms in the Senate.Congress is dominated by career politicians, like Elizabeth Warren, who become conflicted
by special interests and fierce loyalty to only a party or political agenda. Simply put, if you can't effectuate change within twelve years of being in Washington, then someone else should get a chance.

On Health Care:
Don’t let ObamaCare tax credits sunset
Quality, affordable health care in America is a necessity and should not be considered out of reach for anyone. Congress must do a better job at reining in administrative costs, but not at the expense of our citizens.- Expand the Premium Tax
Credit (PTC) for low-income families. Tax credits implemented under the Affordable Care Act are set to expire in 2025, and it's imperative that Congress has the courage to keep them from sunsetting. This cost-sharing tool allows citizens who seek
employment and transition away from Medicaid to maintain support while they adjust to an independent life.
- Ban the use of medical debt in credit scoring.
- Raise the cap on low-income families eligible for cost sharing reductions (CSRs).
These ideas require bipartisan compromises in order to change America's health care system for the better. As a nonpartisan U.S. Senator, I promise to seek solutions that are not rammed through on party-line votes.

On Homeland Security:
Expand Veterans Choice Program to outside the VA
Having served in the U.S. Marine Corps, I understand the personal sacrifice that our men and women in uniform--and their families--make to keep our nation safe. When elected, supporting Veterans will be my top priority.I support choice for Veterans.
I believe we should expand the Veterans Choice Program to allow Veterans to seek treatment outside of the VA system to meet their medical needs and reduce the strain on the VA.
We must expand mental health services for Veterans returning home from foreign wars and conflicts. Thousands of troops have returned home from Afghanistan and Iraq with
PTSD that has gone untreated. This is wrong, and as your next Senator, I will fight to be on the Veterans Affairs Committee and fight to ensure that every service member who needs care receives it.

On Immigration:
Right to shelter makes MA Ground Zero in migrant crisis
Today, our country faces an unprecedented crisis at our southern border. MA guarantees a right to shelter to the homeless, and because of that law enacted in 1983, the Commonwealth has become Ground Zero in the migrant crisis. In fact, during the summer
of 2023, Democratic Governor Maura Healey declared the Commonwealth in a state of emergency, caused by the inflow of illegal migrants. The crisis has gotten so bad that the Governor even asked the public to open their homes to help house undocumented,
unknown individuals from around the world, including from regions where hatred for America and Democracy are fostered. I believe most of the undocumented migrants are good people, desiring a better life.
But even if only a small percentage of people illegally entering America have bad intentions, our national security is at risk. Simply put, the status quo is unsustainable, undermines legal immigration, and it will cost MA taxpayers billions of dollars.

On Social Security:
Honor our commitments & replenish our national trust fund
We must honor our commitment to Americans who expect to rely on Social Security. At the same time, we must replenish a national trust fund that has been robbed for decades by politicians to fund pet projects without serious promises of paying back what
they took. Preserving Social Security should not be a partisan wedge issue, but unfortunately Senator Warren has made it one. One-party solutions will never happen, which is why we need nonpartisan leaders in Washington who can bring both sides to the
table. Modest tax increases on the wealthiest Americans, along with means testing, is not enough to close the $2.6 trillion hole in Social Security which accounts for 38% of the government's $35 trillion national debt.
We must get serious about confronting whether the current program is sustainable for those who come after us, and it will require us to ask private employers and individual families to join together in preparing for their retirement years.

On War & Peace:
Israel has the absolute right to defend itself
The brutal terrorist attacks of October 7th serve as a solemn reminder that evil, and anti-Semitism still exist in our world. I strongly believe that Israel has the absolute right to defend itself and its borders. Hamas is a terrorist organization whose
Charter is the complete destruction and annihilation of Israel and to bring death to every Jew. Any solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must include an unequivocal acknowledgment of Israel's right-to-exist. In sum, Hamas seeks to kill Jews and
Americans and it must be defeated. From being the sole democracy in a troubled part of the world, to sharing intelligence on terrorists who want to kill Americans, Israel is one of America's strongest allies in the world--and supporting Israel is in
America's interests.I believe Rules of Engagement must be followed. Even a country defending itself from an act of genocide must takes measures to reduce the loss of civilian life, whenever possible.

On War & Peace:
Only finance Ukraine with metrics for tactical independence
America is financing a war between Ukraine and Russia that has no plan and no end in sight. Hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent by lawmakers without a clear definition of what constitutes success.
Russia is undoubtedly an adversary and should not be allowed to invade neighboring nations, but Ukraine must also establish its own processes for self-determination.
As Senator, I would only support additional funds to Ukraine if
President Zelenskyy can meet metrics for financial and tactical independence established by the U.S. in a bipartisan matter.

On Abortion:
Massachusetts got this right: unrestricted until viability
Deaton: Massachusetts actually got this right. Which gives a woman right up to 22 weeks to have unrestricted access to abortion. After that period of time she's not allowed unless it's for her health reasons or there is an anomaly.
We are talking about the viability issue around that time. That's what I support. Warren: John Deaton gives us the big defense of the filibuster that keeps us from making Roe v. Wade law of the land.
That's the problem. We can't pass it with 52 votes because the Republicans filibuster us. So here's the deal. If Republicans are in control of the Senate, there will be no bill to make Roe v. Wade law of the land.
That means when they are coming for us in Massachusetts, we have no defense.

On Civil Rights:
Supports marriage equality
[Deaton] is a candidate who melds that Trumpian appeal to the working class with a moderation on social issues--he supports abortion rights and marriage equality--that should be familiar to Massachusetts voters."I am tired of these presidential
candidates not representing the people that I care about--that's the working class & the poor. I got in this race because they are not being represented," he said. "When you look at the Senate, you do not see someone who has been working 50 hours a week."

On Environment:
Represented people stricken by asbestos-related illnesses
Michigan-born Deaton, 56, spent two decades practicing law in Rhode Island before setting up house in Swansea in January with his romantic partner of nine years, Kristi. Deaton gets feisty when he's asked about his comparably brief residency in the
Bay State. He quickly points out that he lived in Roxbury while attending the New England School of Law in Boston. He supported himself, he said, by working at Legal Sea Foods at Copley Place. "You could find me playing basketball at
Washington Park [in Roxbury]," Deaton said of his law school days.
Later, as an Ocean State-based attorney representing people stricken by asbestos-related illnesses, Deaton said his clients spanned the Commonwealth. "I have literally been sitting at
the kitchen tables of Massachusetts residents who are asbestos victims for the last two decades," he said. The question isn't merely an academic one. Political hopefuls with residency issues traditionally haven't had great luck at the polls.

On Foreign Policy:
They've got money for Ukraine war, but can't feed the poor
Deaton: Of course I favor democracy but we've got to know what the plan is. And to the warmongers in Washington saying "Ukraine is going to win" is a plan, that is not a plan. That's a wish. We could have spent Medicaid money and expanded
Medicaid in the states that didn't adopt it, giving millions of more people health insurance for 20 years. It's been 30 years since Tupac said it, but I'm going to say it again. They've got money for war, but can't feed the poor.
Warren: We are a partner for Ukraine as they fight for democracy and I think that's powerfully important. The question we have to ask ourselves is why are these handful of Republicans who have turned their backs on
Ukraine and the answer is because Donald Trump is still angry with Ukraine because Ukraine wouldn't help him try to dig up dirt on Joe Biden back when Donald Trump was president.

On Government Reform:
Bottom line: government is the problem most of the time
Deaton: She believes the government is the solution to all problems in society. I'm surprised she didn't say we are going to fund it by taxing the wealthy because every single thing she says, climate change, housing, education, every issue is tax the
wealthy. And she didn't say that and I'm curious. The bottom line is the government is the problem most of the time. Builders are taking two years just to get welding permits. We have to cut the red tape.
Warren: Housing prices are out of control. We have been sitting here for 40 years talking about how housing prices are going up and up and it has truly reached crisis proportions. It is time for the federal government to partner up and that's why
I have mayors saying I want to be part of that. The Warren plan is a plan to build more housing and bring down costs. Mr. Deaton is one to say let the private market fix it like it has fixed at the last 30 years.

On Immigration:
Expand legal immigration; against illegal immigration
Warren: Republicans fought for comprehensive immigration reform back in 2019. I voted for the bill, and we got enough people together to do comprehensive immigration reform, and what happened? It went over to the house and extremist
Republicans said we want to keep this as an election issue. Exactly what Donald Trump did in 2016, 2018, 2020, 2020 two, and 2024.
Deaton: They do not need a senator reminiscing about some bill that did not actually happen to get passed in 2013. The bottom line for everybody out there is
Senator Warren has the same exact position as Donald Trump, do nothing. The bill was not perfect. I can assure you of that. I want to see legal immigration expanded more and have zero tolerance for illegal immigration.

On Jobs:
Regulations have driven commercial fishermen to bankruptcy
Deaton: They have created so many regulations that commercial fishermen here in Massachusetts have basically been bankrupt. The Chevron decision dealt with the fishermen because people like
Senator Warren said we are going to send someone on your boat and they are going to count how many fish you catch it and you are going to have to pay for it out of your own earnings even though you are trying to support your family. That's insanity.

On Principles & Values:
I come from extreme poverty in a dangerous neighborhood
Deaton: I come from extreme poverty living in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. My mother was stabbed when I was six in front of me. For 2 years I was raped by a predator in the neighborhood. My best friend died in a drive-by shooting.
The first day of high school I had a gun shoved in my mouth. A tiny Catholic high school gave me a chance and quite frankly saved my life.Warren: I appreciate that John Deaton grew up in a really poor family and in a really difficult circumstance.
And I have some sense of what it's like to listen to your mother cry because she can't pay the bills and worried you are going to lose your housing. I have spent my whole life fighting for working families. John Deaton, he takes care of himself first.
Take a look at his tax returns. Worth what? Tens of millions of dollars, maybe $100 million and he couldn't find more than $56 to give to charity across two years?

On Tax Reform:
We don't need 87,000 IRS agents for only 735 billionaires
Deaton: She supported 87,000 IRS agents. What was her answer? "It's for the billionaires." There are 735 billionaires living in america.
The 87,000 IRS agents, if it was for the billionaires, they would only need 735 of them and we could assign them to each billionaire all year long.
Warren: The IRS agents he's talking about are the people hired to do enforcement against tax cheats who make more than $400,000 a year and it is an incredibly successful program.
For every dollar invested we are getting somewhere between six and $10 back in revenues from people who don't follow the current law because they know under the Republican regime that the IRS doesn't have the manpower to come after them.

On Technology:
Support Bitcoin; Warren introduced bill to ban it
Deaton has also drawn significant support from major players in the cryptocurrency world like Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, the twins of Facebook fame, who donated $1 million worth of Bitcoin to a super PAC backing Deaton.
Deaton has said cryptocurrency would not become a central issue in his campaign even though he provided legal representation to people who own crypto and has heavily criticized Warren for her stances on the matter.
After multiple speakers alluded to or referenced the topic during his primary night party, he alleged Warren was the "crypto candidate, not me."
"Why did, when she announced her reelection, focus on crypto,"
he told reporters after declaring victory. "I think we got some other issues to talk about. I'm not talking about crypto. She's talking about crypto. She's introduced a bill that bans Bitcoin."

On Welfare & Poverty:
Oppose decades-old right-to-shelter law
At a debate on Cape Cod last week, Deaton said he had set up a political fund to support candidates for the state Legislature who are willing to tackle the emergency shelter system and Massachusetts' decades-old right-to-shelter law.
The political newcomer has tapped into former Republican Gov. Charlie Baker's network to help run his primary and general election pushes. Deaton has pointed to Baker as one of the elected Massachusetts conservatives he admired most.

On Welfare & Poverty:
Authored "Food Stamp Warrior", a memoir
Deaton is relying in large part on the tale of his hardscrabble roots in a crime-ridden Detroit neighborhood -- laid out in his memoir "Food Stamp Warrior" -- that would seem Dickensian, if it were not already true."It's time to get someone who
fights for things," Deaton said, declaring that Warren "fights for the rich and wealthy," while he "[wants] to fight for the poor and the middle class."
"I'm looking forward to introducing Massachusetts voters to someone like that," he said.
