On Abortion: The Maine GOP is fighting to protect the lives of the unborn

Despite Collins' support for abortion rights, the Maine Republican Party's chair, Demi Kouzounas, said in a fundraising email late Thursday that "the Maine GOP is fighting to protect the lives of the unborn, but we can not do it alone. We NEED your help. If you are pro-life, DONATE today to recruit, train, and elect candidates who will fight for the unborn and stand up to Governor Mills her friends pro-abortion stance."

On Immigration: Illegal immigrants, drugs, and guns are crossing our border

[On the border]: "The Biden-Harris administration has been a complete failure with handling the crisis at the southern border," said Kouzounas. "With each passing day we reach new highs of illegal immigrants, drugs, and guns crossing our border. If the Biden administration and the federal government won't keep us safe, it is up to each state to help. The Maine Republican Party is calling on Janet Mills to assist these states and play an active role in stopping this crisis and help keep America safe."

On Principles & Values: Former chair of Maine GOP

Former Maine Republican Party chairwoman Demi Kouzounas says she'll challenge independent U.S. Sen. Angus King this year and that she was asked to run by Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Kouzounas said she decided to run because no other Republican had stepped forward. "To have a senator go unopposed I think is terrible," she said.

A spokesperson for [Independent Senator] King said the senator was disappointed that [fellow Senator] Collins actively recruited his opponent, but that he would continue to work with her as he has since winning his first term.

A spokesperson for Collins said the senator routinely talks to prospective candidates and that, while she won't be making a formal endorsement, she thought it was important that Republicans have a quality candidate in the U.S. Senate race.

Kouzounas headed the Maine GOP for six years before getting removed from that role last year following Republicans' poor showing in legislative, gubernatorial and congressional contests in the 2022 midterms.

On Civil Rights: Wants state party to be a little more inclusive and diverse

Kouzounas said one of her goals is to do "more aggressive messaging" and see the party be "a little more inclusive, a little more diverse."

"I think we have room to grow," she said. "I think a lot of people have branded us as, I hate to say it, an older group of people, maybe more male-oriented, but I'm here to tell you that that's not the case. We have a lot of millennials getting involved. We're looking to have more women involved, and more people of different ethnic diversity."

On Government Reform: Deeply concerned about possibility of election fraud

On Nov. 12, 2020, days after Joe Biden had officially won the 2020 election, Kouzounas said in a statement that the Maine GOP was "deeply concerned with the anomalies" in voting in several states and the "possibility of election fraud."

"As far as we are concerned, President Trump is still our President until proven otherwise," she said, adding that, "We will not rest until the truth about the 2020 election is revealed and we return trust to American elections."

On Foreign Policy: China planned pandemic to harm Trump's re-election

Days after former Pres. Donald Trump lost in 2020, Kouzounas said on conservative talk radio that the pandemic was a plan hatched by the Chinese government to harm Trump's re-election chances — a conspiracy started by Trump's hardcore supporters. In another radio interview months later, Kouzounas referred to Jan. 6 Capitol rioters as "our people" and again veered into conspiracy theorizing about the riot being a plot to entrap Trump supporters.
