Lucas Kunce in 2024 MO Senate race

On Abortion: Get rid of the filibuster and codify Roe v. Wade

I support getting rid of the filibuster and codifying Roe versus Wade. Like this law, the Missouri trigger law that was put into effect. No exceptions for rape or incest. That's crazy. The reason these country club Republicans were cool with passing that law is because it doesn't affect them. Because they have wealth. They have access. They have power. And if they or their family members need to get an abortion, they're just going to leave town and go out of state to go do it right.

On Corporations: I worked to upend the domination of corporate monopolies

From the Middle East to the Pentagon, my time in the Marine Corps provided me with direct insight into the control that giant corporations have over our tax dollars, our politics, and our everyday lives. That's why, in my final year of active duty, I worked to upend the domination of corporate monopolies over our economy that is crushing innovation, costing taxpayers money, and leaving our country less safe.

On Crime: Failure to invest in our communities increases crime

What we need to do is invest in our country again. We need to invest in early childhood education, universal pre-K, afterschool programs. I watched us spend $6.4 trillion in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can't do anything close to that here. It's unbelievable. And it increases crime. It gives people fewer opportunities and it leaves places like my old neighborhood just destroyed. The house I grew up in, you know, it's boarded up and it's because we don't make investments in our communities.

On Gun Control: Raise the age limit to purchase a gun from 18 to 21

While he said he would have voted for a legislative package that increased funding for red flag laws and mental health programs, Kunce said Congress needs to go further when it comes to restricting firearms. Pointing to his experience in the military, Kunce said he supports raising the age limit to purchase a gun from 18 to 21.

On Jobs: Corrupt pols attack workers with "Right-to-Work" schemes

While our state has been getting stripped for parts, corrupt politicians like Josh Hawley have been attacking workers with schemes like "Right-to-Work" and fighting to block wage increases for Missouri families--all to enrich multinational corporations and mega-donors who bankroll their campaigns.

On Principles & Values: Never forget the community you signed up to serve

I deployed to Iraq on my first of three tours of duty in the War on Terror, before later being stationed at the Pentagon. During those 13 years of active duty I learned firsthand what service and sacrifice for your country really means, the same things I had heard about down at the Apache Flats Marine Corps League: Doing the right thing when you're thousands of miles from home, believing in a mission that's bigger than yourself, and never forgetting the community you signed up to serve.

On War & Peace: Negotiated for fewer arms, less chance of conflict

My work led to a position on the Joint Staff as an International Negotiations Officer. There, I oversaw U.S. military compliance with our international arms control obligations and negotiated arms control agreements and strategy at the National Security Council, NATO, and non-allied countries like Russia. I spent every day doing what I could to make the world a safer place, with fewer arms, less chance of conflict, and more money to spend on improving lives rather than destroying them.

On Principles & Values: Christian nationalism is about control, taking away freedom

Missouri's Senior Senator stood firm after an eye-opening speech advocating America be only about one religion: Christianity.

"In our history and in our ideals, America has been a Christian nation," Hawley said during his interview with First Alert 4. "I think most Americans believe in God and think religion is important and we should defend those folks."

"Some will say now that I am calling America a Christian nation. So I am," Hawley shared. "And some will say that I am advocating Christian nationalism. And so I do."

Lucas Kunce called [Hawley's] speech and Christian nationalism overall about control and said it takes away an individual's freedom. "It is an agenda of controlling everyday people in the doctor's office, in the workplace, in their bedroom and for a freedom-loving state like Missouri, that's bad," Kunce said.

On Technology: Adopt industrial policy to decarbonize transportation sector

[In a campaign ad against Kunce], Sen. Josh Hawley criticized Kunce over his call to eliminate the country's reliance on fossil fuels. Hawley's claim relies on an essay Kunce wrote in the American Prospect in 2021. In the essay, Kunce argued that the U.S. needed to end its reliance on fossil fuels for the sake of national security. "For our national security, we must adopt an industrial policy to rapidly and fully decarbonize our energy and transportation sectors," Kunce wrote. "We need to ditch all fossil fuels, not just oil, the same way we ditched whale oil for petroleum in the late 1800s."

The essay, argues that the U.S. could decrease its involvement in the Middle East if the country no longer relied on oil, before going on to talk about global security concerns created by severe weather events attributed to climate change. Hawley's campaign seized on the line "we need to ditch all fossil fuels" and applied it to pickup trucks. Kunce's essay makes no mention of pickup trucks.
