On Foreign Policy: Signed law banning foreign adversaries from buying property

Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signed a bill Thursday to prohibit the sale or lease of agricultural land, critical infrastructure and homes near military assets in Montana to the government, businesses and individuals from China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia or Venezuela--all countries the U.S. government designates foreign adversaries. "Montana will not stand idly by as foreign adversaries buy up our farmland, harvest private data, and spy on Americans," Gianforte said in a statement. On Homeland Security: Voted to increase military forces, modernize our defense

"As threats to the United States continue to grow, we have too many aircraft that cannot fly, too many ships that cannot go to sea, and a force size that has diminished too much," Gianforte said. "We must ensure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need to get the job done and come home safely. The National Defense Authorization Act begins the process of rebuilding and restoring our military by increasing the size of our forces and modernizing our defense." On Environment: $50 million EPA grant for resilience of forests & waterways

Environment:

Ryan Busse (D): Tighten. Would rebuild the MT Dept. of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Opposes "transfer[ing] management of federal public lands to states."
Greg Gianforte (R): Mixed. Secured funds that led to $50 million from the EPA "to improve the resilience of our forests, agriculture industry, and waterways." Opposed a federal effort to prohibit new coal leases in Montana until 2038.

On Government Reform: No same-day voter registration; yes voter ID

Voting Rules:

Ryan Busse (D): Easier. "We will make it easier for people to vote" and "do everything we can to increase the franchise, not reduce" it. "It's not right to have armed people scaring voters at polling places."
Greg Gianforte (R): Harder. In 2021 signed bills ending same-day voter registration and creating new photo ID requirements. In 2024 the Montana Supreme Court ruled the laws unconstitutional.
