2024 NC Governor's race: on Government Reform

Dale Folwell: Oppose IRS monitoring banks accounts with more than $600

Folwell is among a group of state treasurers and auditors opposing a proposal that would allow the IRS to monitor bank accounts with more than $600. Folwell said the plan would increase the administrative burden for small banking institutions, especially those in rural North Carolina "who are already struggling to keep up with ransomware and hacking of their computers, and just generally, fighting against big banking behemoths across the country."

Dale Folwell: Voter ID protects most sacred thing we do as citizens

Several Republican House members have said voter identification is one of the most important issues to their constituents. "How can you possibly vote against a requirement where in one instance you have to show a photo ID (in Winston-Salem) to panhandle but not show a photo ID to do the most important and sacred thing that we do as citizens?" said House Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell.

Josh Stein: 2020: allowed more time for mail-in ballot acceptance

In 2020, Stein drew the ire of conservatives after his office struck a settlement that allowed more time for mail-in ballots to be accepted and let voters who submitted absentee ballots without a required witness signature to still have their votes counted if they returned an additional form to state elections officials without a witness signature.

Andy Wells: Has a knack for finding and removing burdensome regulations

On announcing his retirement: "Andy has been a dedicated and thoughtful member of the Senate. He has worked tirelessly to reform the state's pension and retirement system, making sure that it remains solvent for years to come," Senate Leader Phil Berger said. "He has a knack for finding regulations that have burdened businesses and the citizens of North Carolina. His work to remove those burdens will have a lasting legacy on the state."

Mark Robinson: Modernize election systems and bolster election integrity

Q: ELECTIONS AND VOTING: Voting absentee by mail ballot should be limited to those meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1) 65 years of age or older on Election Day, 2) sick or disabled, 3) expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day, or 4) confirmed to be absent from the county of registration during voting?

A: Strongly Agree. As lieutenant governor, I've been a strong advocate for continuing to modernize our election systems and bolster election integrity-- I've even testified to Congress in support of these priorities. I support Republican-led reforms to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat, such as enacting our state's voter ID law and ensuring that the rules for early and absentee voting are more uniform throughout the state--so that everyone plays by the same rules.
