On Abortion:
I'm in court fighting for women's reproductive freedom
Attorney General Josh Stein today challenged a decision that could restrict medication abortion access nationwide. Stein and a coalition of 24 attorneys general filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the court to stop a district court ruling from
taking effect while an appeal is ongoing. The ruling, if it took effect, would overturn the FDA's 23-year-approval of the medication abortion drug mifepristone. Unwinding FDA approval would drastically reduce women's access to safe abortion care and
ability to manage miscarriages, and trample states' authority to protect access to medical care for abortions."Medication abortion is safe and effective, and has been for decades," said Stein. "The medication is safer than Tylenol or Viagra.
This judge's decision is wrong on every level, and it takes away safe medical care for women, putting their health at risk. I'm in court fighting for women's reproductive freedom so women in North Carolina can make decisions about their own bodies."

Every NC student has the right to a sound, basic education
Your kid deserves a high quality education. Under the constitution, every student in North Carolina has a right to a sound, basic education.
We need a strong principal in every school and a good teacher in every classroom. That's what I am fighting to achieve.

On Civil Rights:
No one should have to live in fear because of who they are
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is joining a growing bipartisan chorus calling for Congress to pass a proposed hate crimes bill which he says would help law enforcement better pursue justice for victims. "No one should have to
live in fear because of who they are. If we're going to successfully fight the violence that hateful rhetoric spawns, we need the tools necessary to get the job done," he said in a statement.

On Drugs:
Time to have real conversations about potential legalization
[On marijuana decriminalization]: "You cannot talk about improving racial equity in our criminal justice system without talking about marijuana," said Attorney General Josh Stein. "White and Black North Carolinians use marijuana at similar rates, yet
Black people are disproportionately arrested and sentenced. Additionally, it is time for North Carolina to start having real conversations about a safe, measured, public health approach to potentially legalizing marijuana."

On Government Reform:
2020: allowed more time for mail-in ballot acceptance
In 2020, Stein drew the ire of conservatives after his office struck a settlement that allowed more time for mail-in ballots to be accepted
and let voters who submitted absentee ballots without a required witness signature to still have their votes counted if they returned an additional form to state elections officials without a witness signature.

On Gun Control:
For "red flag" laws; raising age to 21 to buy AR-15 rifle
He called for public safety campaigns to remind and encourage people to store their guns safely, and for "red flag" laws that allow courts to temporarily take firearms from people who are at risk of shooting themselves or other people.
Stein also said the age for someone to buy an AR-15 rifle should be raised from 18 to 21. "We don't let young people buy a cigarette or a beer. But we let them buy an AR-15? It just doesn't make any sense," Stein said.

On Principles & Values:
Jewish faith guides him to make the world a better place
He also says his Jewish faith guides him to try to leave the world a more equitable place. "My parents were very proud Jews and they infused us with Judaism and what the fundamental values of Judaism are,"
Stein said. "Foundational to that is the sense that each of us has an obligation to try to make things better than the way we find it."

On Tax Reform:
$520 tax cut for every average working family
Stein said he is proposing the working families tax cut, which would reinstate the State Earned Income Tax Credit. It was eliminated in 2014, according to information from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
It is different from the federal earned income tax credit, which families still can claim.Stein's office estimates the average working family could receive more than
$520 if the proposed plan is put in place, and families with three or more children could see as much as $1,486 back in their pockets from the tax credit.
"It's all about putting more money into the pockets of working people, raising children out of poverty and stimulating local economies," Stein said.

On Welfare & Poverty:
Make affordable single-family home ownership a reality
[Gubernatorial candidate] Bill Graham [says], "First-time homebuyers would get a $5,000 credit on their state income taxes over two years. Only people who have lived in NC for at least three years would qualify."Josh Stein is also talking about
affordable housing. A campaign spokesperson highlighted his work as attorney general to crack down on businesses that prey on homeowners: "From his first job out of law school with the Self Help Credit Union working to make affordable single-family
home ownership a reality for working families to taking on predatory mortgage lenders as Attorney General, Josh has a record of addressing folks' housing challenges. As governor, he will work to expand the full range of housing options across the state,
so that a home is a source of stability, not stress. That means using incentives from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency to increase workforce homeownership, expanding the supply of affordable rental housing, and reducing homelessness."

NORML Politician Info: rated A
Josh Stein (D) summary: LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE / DECRIMINALIZE MEDICAL USE- 6/24/2024 Charlotte Observer: Medical marijuana passes NC Senate, heads to the House.
Will this time be different?
- Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein said the bill lacks protections and should go further in decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana and expunging past convictions. "It's past time for
N.C. to move forward on medical cannabis, decriminalization of simple possession, and expungement of criminal records, but we have to do it right. HB 563 fails to adequately protect kids,"
Stein wrote in a statement shared last week.

On Tax Reform:
Cut taxes for working families
I believe in the promise of this state that if you work hard, where you come from should not limit how far you can go. I am running for Governor to deliver on that promise by investing
in our people and their futures and building a state with a thriving economy, safe communities, and strong schools. As Governor, I will work to deliver the economic security and peace of mind that every
North Carolinian deserves by lowering costs, raising the minimum wage, and cutting taxes for working families. I will work to build safe communities by confronting the fentanyl crisis
and recruiting and retaining well-trained, public-spirited law enforcement officers. And I will recommit our state to investing in our public schools.

Voucher programs suck money out of the public schools

Public school teachers are "wicked people."
- Josh Stein (D): No. A publicly funded voucher program "sucks money out of the public schools," putting rural counties
without a large tax base "behind the eight ball." "We need every marginal dollar we can find in the budget to invest in our public schools."

On Foreign Policy:
Supports a two-state solution for Israel/Palestine
Stein told the News & Observer last year that a two-state solution was the answer to a "permanent resolution" in the region. "Hamas represents a real threat to Israel," he told the N&O. "Israel is justified to try to address that threat.
They have to do it in a way that minimizes … the impact on civilians because there are a couple of million Palestinians who live in Gaza who have nothing to do with Hamas, and are just trying to live their lives."
