"The technology being developed for Minnkota's project has the potential to be a game-changer for our state, the nation and the world by curbing emissions and ensuring that the reliable, affordable energy we've come to expect from coal continues to keep the lights on," Burgum said. "This promising technology will benefit consumers, the environment and the coal and oil industries that provide thousands of good-paying jobs and billions of dollars in tax revenue.

The bill passed the House multiple times in its original form, survived an effort by the Senate to turn it into solely a study, and eventually passed both chambers and was submitted to Governor Burgum. Governor Burgum vetoed the bill, and upon reconsideration for an override vote, the House of Representatives passed the override, but the bill failed the required 2/3rds majority override vote in the Senate.
Despite the House overwhelmingly approving the income tax relief in House Bill 1549 on a 71-19 vote, the Senate voted 16-31 to defeat the bill today. "This is a missed opportunity. Senators could have followed the House's lead and deliver much-needed tax relief to North Dakotans struggling with high inflation. Instead, they squandered that opportunity." Burgum said.
"This tax relief was a no-brainer: The citizens have the need, and we definitely have the resources. Current information shows our state's financial position is stronger than ever," Burgum said.
"The attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel is reprehensible, and the fact it occurred on a Jewish holiday is despicable. We stand with our democratic ally Israel while lifting up in prayer the victims of these horrific attacks," Burgum said. "We also pray for the safe return of the priests and parishioners from North Dakota congregations who are anxiously waiting to board flights home. Today we reached out to the U.S. State Department and spoke with Father Ackerman, offering to assist however possible to help ensure the safe return of those North Dakotans and all Americans wanting to return to U.S. soil."
