2024 OH Senate race: on Drugs

Frank LaRose: Led effort increasing penalties for opioid epidemic

Frank led the charge to combat the opioid epidemic by sponsoring Senate Bill 1, a bill to increase criminal penalties for trafficking or possessing fentanyl. Frank made clear that those who were addicted needed to be in treatment, "but those who are trafficking this poison need to be in prison." He cosponsored a bill allowing judges to give longer prison terms for major drug offenders, and he led the effort to increase penalties for violent career criminals.

Sherrod Brown: FEND Off Fentanyl Act: stop flow from China & Mexico

This Committee heard about the human toll that illicit fentanyl takes on our families, our friends, our neighbors. The witnesses stressed the need to come together [to take] action to stop the flow of illicit fentanyl from China and Mexico.

Last year, we included the FEND Off Fentanyl Act in the annual defense authorization bill. But this hasn't become law yet, because of politicians in the House playing politics. The FEND Off Fentanyl Act was not the only Committee priority that the House blocked.
