2024 presidential campaign press release: on Crime

Ron DeSantis: No need for jury unanimity to impose capital punishment

SB450: Requiring a determination of a specified number of jurors, rather than jury unanimity, for a sentencing recommendation of death to the court.

ACLU-Florida summary in opposition, 2/9: Ends the requirement for unanimous juries in death penalty cases, and allows the imposition of death based on as few as 8 jurors. Allows judges to override a jury's recommendation of a life sentence and instead impose death. Florida will be one of only 2 states that impose death on people without requiring a unanimous jury--a foolish idea for a state that already leads the nation in exonerations of those on death row.

Governor's press release in favor, 4/20: "Once a defendant in a capital case is found guilty by a unanimous jury, one juror should not be able to veto a capital sentence," said Governor Ron DeSantis.

Legislative Outcome: Passed Senate 29-10-1 on Mar/30/23; passed House 80-30-9 on Apr/13/23; signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on Apr/20/23.

Kamala Harris: Police reforms via George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Sonya Massey [who was shot in the face after she picked up a pot of boiling water on her stove] deserved to be safe. After she called the police for help, she was tragically killed in her own home at the hands of a responding officer sworn to protect and serve. We join Sonya's family and friends in grieving her senseless death.

Our thoughts are also with the communities across our nation whose calls for help are often met with suspicion, distrust, and even violence. The disturbing footage confirms what we know from the lived experiences of so many--we have much work to do to ensure that our justice system fully lives up to its name.

I call on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a bill that I coauthored in the Senate. In this moment, in honor of Sonya's memory and the memory of so many more whose names we may never know, we must come together to achieve meaningful reforms that advance the safety of all communities.

Donald Trump: Violent crime is up, but FBI changed crime data collection

Violent crime hasn't "dropped," as the Fake News insists. When Kamala took office, the FBI changed how it collects crime data. As a result, they're missing data from nearly a third of the nation's law enforcement agencies -- including from many of the most violent cities. A much more accurate picture emerges using data from the DOJ's National Crime Victimization Survey, which shows crime rates remain WAY UP under Kamala:President Donald J. Trump will END the lawlessness once again.
