2024 presidential campaign press release: on Immigration

Doug Burgum: Strongly opposes transporting migrants to North Dakota

In a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Gov. Doug Burgum stressed his opposition to the transfer of detained migrants from the southern border to North Dakota being considered by DHS:

"As a northern border state, we have seen unsettling media reports that North Dakota is being considered by DHS officials as a site for the relocation of migrants detained at the south Texas border. Our administration does not support the transfer to North Dakota of migrants who have entered the US without permission. While our state willingly participates in the resettlement of legal, thoroughly vetted refugees, we strongly oppose any efforts to alleviate the southern border crisis of the overwhelming influx of migrants by transporting them to northern border states. We urge the administration to address this crisis at the source, fully enforce federal immigration laws, and reassure northern border states that relocation is not on the table."

Asa Hutchinson: Quickly remove those who come into our country illegally

Our nation is a land of immigrants who make up the fabric of our democracy. In order to respect those who follow the legal path to come to this country, we must reform our asylum laws; devote more resources to support our border patrol; quickly remove those who come into our country illegally; and go after the cartels who are killing Americans with the deadly drug fentanyl.

Kamala Harris: Keep families together; expand legal pathways to citizenship

From Day One of our administration, President Joe Biden and I have worked to protect immigrants, keep families together, and expand lawful pathways to citizenship. Today, we are building on that work by taking bold action to bring relief to an estimated half a million spouses of American citizens who have been here in the country for a decade or more and their children. They deserve our protection, and should be allowed to remain with their families and contribute to our communities while they apply for a green card.

President Biden and I are also expediting work visas for Dreamers who have graduated from college in the United States and have a job offer from a U.S. employer. We value their contributions and want them to continue to unleash their skills, ideas, and potential right here in the country that has invested in their success, to the benefit of our economy and our communities.

Kamala Harris: Partner with Mexico to address the root causes of migration

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke today with President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico and congratulated her on her historic election as the next President of Mexico. The Vice President reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a strong partnership and friendship with Mexico. They discussed deepening the U.S.-Mexico relationship to address the root causes of migration, strengthen trade ties and economic growth, and combat the trafficking of people, illicit drugs, and firearms. The Vice President and President-elect Sheinbaum pledged to work together to address the global climate crisis and bolster renewable energy within our region. They also discussed the importance of women holding positions of leadership and the empowerment of women and girls.

Kamala Harris: $5.2B public-private investment in Northern Triangle

Vice President Harris convened Central America Forward (CAF) stakeholders today. CAF is a public-private partnership created in response to the Vice President's 2021 Call to Action to deepen investment in northern Central America. CAF is expanding economic opportunity and promoting good governance in northern Central America, which helps reduce irregular migration.

The Vice President announced that CAF has now generated more than $5.2 billion in private sector commitments for El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, including $1 billion of new commitments announced today. These private sector investments have already created more than 70,000 jobs in the region, provided skills training for more than 1 million people, brought 2.5 million people into the formal economy, and connected more than 4.5 million people to the internet.

The Vice President convened leaders from government, the private sector, and civil society to discuss next steps for CAF's long-term development effort.

Donald Trump: Transnational gangs cross the Mexican border at will

The facts: Vicious transnational gangs and cartels are crossing the border essentially at will. More than 40 percent of catch and release migrants have totally disappeared, and the Harris-Biden administration has failed to remove 99.7% of the illegal immigrants released into the interior of the U.S. Those escaping deportation include members of Tren de Aragua, including gang members committing crimes in the U.S. while under deportation order.

The consequences: Mexican cartels are now making $13 billion a year smuggling illegal immigrants into the U.S., 26 times what they made in 2018. The bloodthirsty transnational gang, Tren de Aragua, is building a "criminal empire" in the U.S. because of Kamala's border bloodbath. Among the communities under siege by Tren de Aragua is Aurora, Colorado. President Trump will be visiting today to draw attention to the crisis that Kamala Harris and her allies in the fake news media want to insist does not exist.

Donald Trump: Egregious failures of Kamala as border czar

Kamala Harris was the copilot on some of Biden's most egregious failures. Case in point: As Biden's "border czar," Harris helped fuel the invasion at our southern border. She has only visited the border once as vice president, and far from actually securing the border, she supports the most radical elements of the Democrats' open-borders agenda. She supports abolishing ICE, wants to decriminalize illegal border crossings, and smears Border Patrol agents, namely by being one of main promoters of the "whipping" hoax.

True to form, Harris put America last. She must answer questions on what she knew when, and why she defrauded the American people. Biden and Harris abetted an invasion at our border, fueled inflation, lowered real wages, raised the tax burden on the middle class, weakened America's standing in the world, emboldened our enemies, allowed criminals to control our streets, and prioritized special interest groups over families.

Kamala Harris: Root Causes Strategy: $4.2B for stable Central America

I look forward to hosting President Arevalo [the newly-inaugurated President of Guatemala] in Washington in the coming months to strengthen the U.S.-Guatemala relationship and to make further progress addressing the root causes of migration. As our Administration continues to implement the Root Causes Strategy, I look forward to working with President Arevalo on civilian security, good governance, human rights and labor protections, gender-based violence, and economic opportunity. Governments must work together to manage irregular migration in our Hemisphere

In addition, I look forward to working with President Arevalo on expanding private sector investments in Guatemala through Central America Forward, the public-private partnership that has generated more than $4.2 billion in investments in northern Central America. Our nations, working with the private sector and civil society, can build a more inclusive, stable, and prosperous future for the people of Guatemala in Guatemala.
