Survey of 2024 Presidential campaign websites: on Crime

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Instead of defunding the police, transform the police

Instead of defunding the police, we will transform the police. We will incentivize them to prevent violence, not make unnecessary arrests. We will train them in deescalation and mediation skills and partner them with neighborhood organizations. No longer will their relationship to the public be adversarial. They will focus their attention on serious crimes, not harassing ordinary people.

Larry Elder: Tell police, DAs: hold criminals accountable for their acts

We will not sacrifice public safety just to appease a naive and corrupt minority who falsely accuses police officers of "systemic racism." We will not surrender the safety of the streets to the insanity of "no cash bail." The message from the White House to all law enforcement officials and district attorneys should be: "Hold criminals accountable for their acts, allow law-abiding citizens to go about their lives in peace and safety, and you will have our full support."

Larry Elder: We need enormous political will to invest in law enforcement

America's great cities have seen better days. We must address the root causes of urban decay. And we must first acknowledge that nearly every major city has had one-party Democrat rule for decades. Our cities can rise again, but it will take enormous political will to invest in law enforcement, shelter and treat the homeless, arrest and prosecute violent criminals, and incentivize business development. America's cities were once the envy of the world. They can be again.

Marianne Williamson: Punishment instead of rehabilitation leads to more crime

In America, our approach to managing violence and crime has typically trended towards largely ineffective punitive approaches, ignoring the underlying causes of our problems. In addition, the punitive--rather than rehabilitative-- approach to holding violent criminals accountable only increases the statistical probability that, once released, such criminals will again perpetrate acts of violence.

What we need to do is to examine the prison population we have and undertake a concerted, national discourse on how to reduce our prison population. Being that the vast majority of prisoners are locked up in state and local prisons, we need a populist movement in each state to release as many non-violent prisoners as possible--and to prepare them for their freedom at the same time. There is no issue where the bully pulpit of the White House is more necessary.

Perry Johnson: I will direct the Attorney General to eliminate the FBI

We are going to replace the DOJ's culture of corruption with a culture of accountability and integrity back into government. I will direct the Attorney General to eliminate the FBI in its entirety. We have too many federal agents to begin and far too much corruption in the investigatory practices. The culture and practices of the FBI are too broken to be fixed.

Cornel West: Demilitarize policing

Targeting the vicious legacy of white supremacy by ending mass incarceration, demilitarizing policing (abolishing Cop-Cities), and promoting reparations for past unjust treatment of Black people. Prioritizing the empowerment of indigenous peoples.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: We will never weaponize the law against political opponents

A Kennedy administration will respect American citizens and stop treating them like suspects and schoolchildren. We will stop manipulating the public with propaganda and targeted leaks. We will never weaponize the law against political opponents, nor hold our own officials above the law. We will return the intelligence agencies to their proper role as protectors not violators of liberty.

Asa Hutchinson: Lock up violent offenders and address unfair sentencing

In our democracy, the rule of law is foundational. The law undergirds liberty when the law is applied equally, with restraint and for the greater good. Yes, we must keep violent offenders off our streets and behind bars, but we must also address unfairness in sentencing. We can--and should--do both. And, we can make America a safer nation by providing our men and women in blue with the resources they need to enforce our laws and protect our families.

Chase Oliver: End mandatory minimum; end victimless crimes

It is long past time we address the problems with our criminal justice system. From Courts to police, to prisons, we need reforms in every area with one goal in mind, empower people, not the government. That means ending qualified immunity for federal law enforcement so those abused or harmed by law enforcement can have their day in court. It means ending mandatory minimum sentencing which ties the hands of judges and compels even some who are innocent to plead guilty to avoid the possibility of lengthy incarceration. It means ending the prosecution of victimless crimes and instead placing the focus of law enforcement on investigating and prosecuting crimes of violence, theft, fraud, or coercion.

Chase Oliver: End death penalty; it doesn't deter

REPLACING THE DEATH PENALTY WITH HUMANE ALTERNATIVES: I am an opponent of the death penalty. In too many instances the government has carried out an execution and it was later found out that the convicted were actually innocent of their crimes. It also does not deter crime, and the act itself is both cruel and does nothing to restore what was lost by the victims.
