2024 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Government Reform

Katie Hobbs: Stood up to federal plan to slash Arizona's water supply

I will continue working with everybody to find the solutions we need to ensure our water future is secure for tomorrow and for generations. There is no better example of this than the agreement I negotiated earlier this year with our neighbors, Nevada and California, to conserve at least three million acre-feet of water 2026. With this historic agreement, we stood up to the federal government's egregious plan to slash Arizona's water and we safeguarded our natural resources.

Kim Reynolds: We've cut 21 agencies & 620 open positions; saved millions

Better customer service for Iowans was the goal of our alignment bill last year. And I'm proud to say, we have already begun to deliver. To top it off, we made these improvements while at the same time reducing the size of government. With the legislature's help, we cut 21 agencies from my cabinet, removed 620 open positions, and saved millions of dollars in just the first year.

Phil Murphy: I support same-day voter registration in New Jersey

We have implemented automatic voter registration. Instituted early in-person voting. Established online voter registration. And restored voting rights to more than 80,000 of our neighbors on probation or parole. I continue to support passing same-day voter registration in New Jersey. Nobody should ever be denied access to the ballot box because they missed a deadline or forgot to send in paperwork. Same-day voter registration will help prevent that.

Bill Lee: Cutting red tape is a green light for job creators

In my view, less government is better government. This year, working with the General Assembly, we will bring forward a plan to repeal or streamline nearly 40% of all existing rules across the executive branch. That's 4,000 rules eliminated or streamlined. I'm proud that this will be one of the largest cuts of red tape, not just in Tennessee history, but for any state anywhere in the country. And cutting red tape is a green light for Tennessee's job creators to continue growing our economy.

Jim Justice: We cut the red tape; businesses are absolutely booming

Remember the taxes we paid, the regulations that burdened our businesses. We slashed them together. Together all of us, we cut the red tape and what happened? Businesses are absolutely booming and jobs are multiplying. And West Virginia has become a magnet for dreams, not dust.

Jim Pillen: Get government out of the way; reduce regulations

To support and grow these incredible economic assets, among our chief goals in state government must be to get government out of the way, reduce regulations and bureaucratic hurdles, and empower people and businesses to thrive. In our administration, we call this Operation: Clean Out the Closets, in which we try to identify every statutory or regulatory mandate that adds needless costs to healthcare, education, senior care, and businesses of all kinds.

Josh Green: Cut through red tape to quickly approve new housing projects

The process of building homes has become so complicated and costly in Hawai'i over the last three decades--fraught with unnecessary bureaucracy, impossible permitting processes, and prohibitive zoning rules--that we needed immediate action. I signed the Emergency Proclamation Relating to Housing on July 17th last year, which formed a committee of the state's leading housing experts--and empowered them to cut through red tape to approve new housing projects more quickly and easily.

Kay Ivey: Supports legislation that prohibits ballot harvesting

We all agree in protecting the integrity of our elections in Alabama. That is why I am proud to support legislation that prohibits ballot harvesting in our state. We would put a stop to any manipulation of our elections by closing loopholes that allow unaccountable, paid political operatives to pressure folks through the absentee voting process. This year, we have a new bill to outlaw ballot harvesting that also protects folks who truly need assistance in having their voices be heard.

Kevin Stitt: Set up courts designed to address business disputes

To be the best state for business and attract more top level CEOs, we need to keep pushing business friendly policies and reducing burdensome regulations. I'm calling on the legislature to take a page out of Delaware and Texas' playbook and set up a system of courts specifically designed to address business disputes. Businesses need assurance that disputes will be adjudicated by courts with expertise in business law.

Chris Sununu: Status as first primary always fought for, earned, and won

Less than 1 month ago, the nation once again turned its eyes towards New Hampshire. Just as we have for the last 100 years, we hosted our First in the Nation Presidential Primary. Our place at the front of the nominating calendar is never given--it is always fought for, earned, and won. We take on the responsibility of getting the process right--and this year was no exception.

Doug Burgum: Federal rules are actually trying to take away state power

When we fight back on federal overreach like what we've done on this, the BLM drilling, and what we've done on Waters of the USA and the 20 other rules that are currently being jammed down on us by the federal government, and I say a rule could be 800 pages. We're like the "Defend Sovereign State Rights Boards and More," because these rules are actually trying to take away the power of the state and move it towards unelected bureaucrats in DC.

Mark Gordon: Will never shy away from standing up to federal government

It is ironic that while the Biden Administration will not secure the border, they will press oppressive regulation on the West. Wyoming fights back to preserve our rights and our way of life using every legal and political resource available to us. I will never shy away from our responsibility to stand up to the federal government. Currently we have 39 pending cases before courts across a spectrum of matters protecting Wyoming's interests. We have not only fought back, we have won.

Jeff Landry: Occupational licensing structure made working here difficult

Our occupational licensing structure is a prime example of how we have made working in Louisiana needlessly difficult. We rank the 6th worst state in occupational licensing while licensing 77 of 102 identified occupations. More than any other state. I urge you to address universally recognize[d] occupational licensures and remove the barriers of employment in Louisiana.

Jeff Landry: Reform our bloated, outdated, antiquated state constitution

Speaking of constitutional parameters, it is time for us to open the dialogue about reforming our bloated, outdated, antiquated, and much abused state constitution. In less than 50 years, the legislature has proposed over 300 amendments of which 210 have been incorporated into to the 1974 constitution. By comparison, the state of Massachusetts still uses their very first constitution with only 120 amendments in 244 years. Something is definitely wrong.

Mike Dunleavy: Federal actions would turn Alaska into a giant snow globe

We can--and we will--continue to defend our rights against a federal administration that has taken 56 executive actions against Alaska in the past three years. If allowed to stand, these actions will turn Alaska into nothing more than a giant snow globe with no future other than a place on a shelf. Fighting back against destructive federal actions is hard, but changing attitudes can be harder.

Pedro Pierluisi: Supports statehood for Puerto Rico

Equality--Said that it is only through statehood that Puerto Rico can guarantee the support of the United States government without discrimination and without inequality.
