2024 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Gun Control

Kim Reynolds: It's impossible to understand why school shootings happen

Last week, the unthinkable happened in Iowa when shots were fired in the halls of Perry High School, taking the life of 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff, and injuring seven others. Our hearts are still heavy and our prayers continue for the victims and their families, and for the entire Perry community. It's impossible to understand why things like this happen. The senselessness of it shakes us to our very core.

Kristi Noem: We're able to market our state as a 2nd Amendment haven

We protect our Second Amendment rights. Constitutional Carry was the very first bill that I signed into law. Two years ago, you all worked with me to make our state the first in the nation to waive all fees for concealed carry permits. We even pay for people's federal background checks. It doesn't cost South Dakotans a penny to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights. We have been able to market our state as a 2nd Amendment haven.

Janet Mills: Close private sale loophole on background checks

I have arrived at the conclusion that I do not know how we can allow people who legally cannot have guns to buy them through a private sale and pose a risk to themselves or the public.

And I do not know how we can hold commercial sellers to a higher standard while allowing an underground market of private sellers to advertise guns for sale without any restrictions. In my conversations with Maine people, I believe they agree. People who can't legally own guns should not have such easy access to them.

Jared Polis: Prevent convicted felons from illegally purchasing firearms

In keeping with our commitment to public safety, Colorado is leading the nation in our efforts to prevent gun violence. To build on this work, we are proposing additional investments to prevent convicted felons from illegally purchasing firearms. Each year, thousands of people who are prohibited from purchasing a firearm try to do so illegally. As a state, we need to stand firm and crack down on illegal firearm activity.

Josh Green: Gun buyback event took almost 500 guns off the streets

In just a few hours, the Departments of Law Enforcement and Public Safety were able to get almost 500 firearms off of our streets in exchange for Foodland gift cards--with no questions asked and no ID required. We collected ghost guns, sawed off shotguns, many semi-automatic weapons, and even an Uzi--and I have asked the directors of these departments to continue holding gun buyback events on a regular basis to get more guns off the streets.

Josh Shapiro: Let's strengthen our gun laws and bring about more order

With gun violence at unacceptable levels in our communities, it's long past time for us to take real action. This year, we have an opportunity to pass the first significant gun reform legislation in 20 years. Why the hell are we okay with loopholes on background checks that allow criminals to get their hands on guns? Just close the loopholes. You all like to talk a big game about law and order. So let's strengthen our laws and bring about more order.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham: Ban assault weapons; raise purchase age for all guns to 21

I am calling for a gun safety package that bans assault weapons, raises the legal purchase age for all guns to 21, institutes a 14-day waiting period, increasing penalties for felons in possession of a firearm, keeps guns out of parks and playgrounds, and allows law enforcement officers to file Extreme Risk Protection Orders to keep firearms away from people who are a danger to themselves or others. These are common-sense measures that will save lives.

Tim Walz: Students should worry about pop quizzes not mass shootings

High school students should be worried about pop quizzes and prom dates--not mass shootings. And that's why, as Governor, I've made it a point to take on the NRA. Last year, we implemented red flag laws and strengthened background checks. Tonight, I'm urging the legislature to join me in making our schools and our communities a little bit safer still by strengthening requirements for safe storage of firearms, reporting lost and stolen guns, and increasing criminal penalties for straw purchasers.

Gavin Newsom: California's gun homicide rate 33% below national average

Thirty years ago, California's gun homicide rate was 50 percent above the national average. Now, it's 33 percent below the national average -- because of our gun safety laws. The red state refusal to follow our lead has had catastrophic impacts. Let's put it this way: If every state in America had California's gun death rate over the past decade, 140,000 more Americans would be alive today.
